Hi Chopen,

what I like about this image :
- the colors and the contrast between them ( wonderful shade of orange !);
- the "snapshot" idea and how it comes across : you saw the opportunity and shot the image but you also gave some thought to composition;
- the title fits the image, and
- the way the clouds are reflected in the water.

However, there are some things that could be improved imho.

This is not an image that keeps the viewer indifferent, which is a good thing e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/sā€¦ " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile) - "/>
The viewer's eyes would go to the wet sand, the silhouette and the clouds. But immediately after that they will be pulled to the too bright and too white sunspots, and that distracts the attention too much.

I don't know how you postprocessed it, but if you have the raw file it might be an idea to play with that a bit and lessen the intensity of the sun, I think the image would benefit from it e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/sā€¦ " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile) - "/>

Thanks for your response and your explanation

Now that I know what your thoughts were, I can see that changing the brightness would indeed change the "mood" of the image, so please disregard that part

Regards,
Margo

First of all, thanks a lot for the critique. It is always appreciated. I thought the critique is fair and ofcourse you are entitled to your opinions. However I do not entirely agree with it.

I have already tweaked the image a lot especially considering the bright spots in the sky caused by the sun. IMO this image is edited to match the experience I had while I was on the beach and the sun is what the sun is, a large bright burning ball of gas. Too much playing with the shadow/highlight feature will make it too 'fake' and while I'm no stranger to that. It doesn't fit with this image if you ask me. I also think the brightness matches the concept of the location being a form of paradise.

Other than that, thanks a lot for your kind words. It is very much appreciated! I just felt I need to explain myself as well though

What would you like to learn?

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

MikeVanata In reply to Chopen [2010-07-07 17:24:20 +0000 UTC]

First, what kind of camera did you use? And how do you capture such perfect focus?

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

Chopen In reply to MikeVanata [2010-07-07 18:36:22 +0000 UTC]

First of all, much props for the work on Dr. Strangelove. I just love that film!
As for the camera I use, it's the Canon EOS 450D (Canon Rebel XSi) with a Sigma 10-20mm lens attached to it though I plan to buy the Canon EOS 7D later this year. The focus in this shot wasn't perfect as I had to make decisions on the settings very quickly, but by choosng a narrow aperture (F10 I believe) the overall clarity could be preserved

MikeVanata In reply to Chopen [2010-07-07 22:33:07 +0000 UTC]

I have a Canon 20D, can I achieve that picture perfect photo with one?

P.S. It's good to see there are good movie lovers out there in the world.

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

Chopen In reply to MikeVanata [2010-07-08 06:23:36 +0000 UTC]

Stanley Kubrick is one of my favorite directors ever
I think the 20D has a better sensor than my camera, though not as much megapixels. I think the shots would come out even more clear and crisp.

Do you have software to edit photos?

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

MikeVanata In reply to Chopen [2010-07-09 19:02:07 +0000 UTC]

Ditto on Kubrick.

I have CS4 for Photoshop.

Chopen In reply to MikeVanata [2010-07-14 17:35:21 +0000 UTC]

In photoshop I usually use shadow/highlight (that's my most important tool in PS) and this tool is only useful in advanced mode. It lightens the darker areas while darkening the brighter parts. After that it's the standard levels, curves and sometimes selective color as well.

Though the biggest visual changes are made in Lightroom. I just love that program! I have made a tutorial/making of though. Maybe you'd be interested in that?

Beautiful! Even though, you've titled it Lost in Paradise, it looks as though he is walking with the weight of the world on his shoulders and at first glance, I felt really sorry for him. Then, I read your title, and thought, maybe I had the wrong impression. Love it, either way, though! Great work!

Chopen In reply to mim304 [2010-04-10 11:20:23 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much! At first I wanted to name it Paradise Lost after the book from John Milton to portray the guy on the photo as someone who has been dropped from Heaven because he looks so sad while the environment is very beautiful and inviting

mim304 In reply to Chopen [2010-04-10 16:17:19 +0000 UTC]

That would've been very fitting, too! I was thinking about this shot while I was out taking a walk this morning. I think I can see it in either perspective, with either (or both) titles. What matters is...it's obviously a great piece of artwork, especially, since it's had me thinking this much about it! Great job!

You're welcome! I love it when I find art that really hits me hard enough to make me think about it for longer than the time that it takes to click onto the next shot, ya know? And, your work really does that for me! You're very inspiring! And, believe me...I need that, after the winter that I've been through! Haven't been able to pick my camera up, or come up with a decent shot or idea for months!
And, Yes! I was the one that added you on Facebook!

Chopen In reply to mim304 [2010-04-12 17:42:58 +0000 UTC]

In that case, it's a pleasure to meet you Melissa
And I definitely understand what you mean. When I'm browsing through my hundreds of new deviations every day I'm just clicking my mouse button on auto pilot, but every now and then I come across a work that just requires more attention from me and those are the shots that drive me to become a better photographer as well. Though at the same time I'm very jealous of the artists that are light years ahead of me.

I guess it's all about the balance. Without knowing that there is better, the drive or motivation to improve cease to exist
