"Damn you Godzilla, you're mistaken if you think your a match for MechaGodzilla!"After a run of several fun but fairly below par movies following "Destroy all Monsters", the Godzilla series returned epically to form with "Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla" and established one of Godzilla's greatest foes.
Mechagodzilla (or at least this version) is a robotic duplicate of Godzilla designed to attack and create a foothold on earth, allowing the "Aliens from the third planet of the Black hole" to invade. He is armed quite literally from head to toe with eye/chest lasers, flame thowers, mouth/hand,knee/toe missile launchers and a forcefield. He can also fly and is made out "Space Titanium.
Ever since seeing this class image . Modelling MechaGodzilla has been well up my list. While the 2003 version is my favourite take on the design ive always had a soft spot for the "Showa" version as he does look pretty mean all the time.

Man, I got to tell you...when I first saw this image as a little thumbnail...I thought it was just a Photoshopped toy. I was like...God! Will these kids stop uploading Photoshopped images of those freaking Godzilla toys. It's an art website!
Then I opened up the image...and my jaw dropped o_0. I couldn't believe I was so wrong. I could not believe that was basically a hand drawn illustration. It looked like a manipulated toy in the thumbnail I swear lol!
Ok, so lets talk about some of the elements you used in this. First and foremost, the smoke is such a mood setter. It's licking and tonguing all the way around the massive machine. It makes him feel more aberrational and ghostly, as opposed to a big clunky war machine. Which is great! I love it. And the fact that you have that same smoke, blowing away from the face; it makes it look like he is standing right next to an explosion that just happened. Might be why he is missing the eye. I don't know.
But when you combine both of those elements...it tells a story. Seeing all the fatigue and divots on the metal shell, makes the monster seem battle tested. He has been through a war and is still ready to go on. Even though the sun is setting; he will fight on. Through the waning day, and long into the endless night.
It's a freaking powerful image. Straight up. Your impact and technique are almost perfect. There is little to comment on there. I just can't believe I almost skipped over this little gem because I assumed it was something it wasn't o_0 Boy I am glad I got to saw this. It's both memorizing and fulfilling.
