Hershey and I entered the arena at a brisk jog, quickly chugging through the light sand. The sun was just starting to set and the air was going to get a little chilly. The Kavan mare seemingly felt right at home, not bothered by the busy show feel around us.
We made a sharp left and halted square in the center. Recalling the pattern in my head as we were just about to start, i fixed my reins one last time.
After taking deep breath, I began tapping the sorrels left side and cued her to spin to the right. She skillfully began turning quicker and quicker, before eventually stopping square after four even spins.
We briefly paused in which she rubbed her face and sniffed the sand, before I moved my hand over to the left and cued her to spin to the left. As she did, I kept my eyes fixed on the judges and silently counted to four.
Just as to the right, we completed four even spins to the left before stopping and hesitating for a short moment once again.
Hershey suddenly perked up, seemingly having heard something - but luckily came right back to me as I asked her to pick up a left lead lope. She sped up to a nice fast pace before we completed a quarter of the first circle, effortlessly able to maintain it.
We flew through the light coloured sand as we completed our two first, large circles. The crowd was loudly cheering us on, almost overshadowing the music blasting from the speakers.
I gently picked up the reins and sat back into the saddle, slowing Hershey back to a slow and steady lope. She easily did as asked, rounding a nice and small circle.
As we reached X, we swapped leads to the right and sped up back to a gallop shortly afterwards. Once again rounding to nice and large circles while maintaining our speed, we slowed down for the third, smaller one.
As soon as we passed through the center again, we swapped leads back to the left. Only slightly increasing out speed to a slightly faster and more comfortable pace.
Hershey let out a loud and long snort as we reached the first corner, head held low. She only perked up a little as we rounded the second corner, now facing down the right fence.
Hershey really said 'pedal to the metal' as soon as I asked her to, straightening out and picking up more and more speed. But I knew that she'd stop exactly when asked to, regardless of speed.
And so she did, digging her hind into the fine sand and eventually coming to a stop after quite the long slide. She didn't hesitate before rolling back over her haunches to the right, taking off at a right lead lope.
Hershey shook a couple flies away, snorting. I myself fixed my hat as I guided the sorrel around the top of the arena once again, approaching the run down for our second stop.
Her ears swiveled back and forth, her strides already growing a little longer before we even turned the corner. I let her open up as soon as we were parallel to the fence.
She once again picked up her pace and reached top speed just before the center marker, before slamming on the breaks and coming to a beautiful sliding stop twenty feet away from the short side fence.
Hershey grunted as we rolled back to the left, departing at a nice and steady lope once again. "One more girl." I muttered to her, leaning forward a little to give her more rein.
We travelled around the top of the arena for one last time, once again speeding up as soon as we were on the straight line. I gently woahed the Kavan mare into a sliding stop just shortly after the center marker, before swiftly backing her up as soon as we came to a halt.
To demonstrate the end of our run I slacked the reins and leaned forward to pet her sweaty neck. Hershey let out a huge breath as we made our way out of the arena.
