Description My second entry into the Exotika contest, like I mentioned in My first entry, there is bound to be artworks more realistic than this but I hope all viewers will be won over by the creativity.

I am surprised I didn't do anything like this a long time ago because I really love bonsai trees and the trees here are stunted and growing on nothing more than solid rock. It was trees like this that inspired the very first bonsai trees in China ( not Japan, it was introduced to Japan later where it came even more popular ). The trees here are all based on real trees which are all of Asian origin ( to fit the theme ) and are some of the most classic and common types of bonsai grown today. The top tree is a Japanese black pine, The red tree is a Japanese maple, The middle tree is a Trident maple, the bottom-left tree is a Chinese juniper and the flowering tree is an Azalea.

Well, it was a long comment but thanks for taking the time to read. Hope You like it.

Are we all like these trees clinging to the rock of life? We are all different but each offers its own insight, its own well being, and its own Soul. The rock connects us all....

I didn't even think about it that much even when creating this one

I guess I see too much into things and maybe that is my problem. It just came to me as I looked at the picture. I always look for more when it really isn't there.Β A flawΒ within me.

Or you could have had a very good English teacher like I did who taught you to over-analyze stuff like I sometimes do

I over-analyze life, methinks, I look at everyone from my own vantage not realizing I must take into consideration, they are Not me but instead an individual with their own views and thought.

I ed this for the following reason: (1) I like the idea. I'm interested in Bonsai (though mine died from lack of love) and Asia (my university study focus) and I think the concept of putting them all together like this is excellent. (2) I really like the colors. (3) I really like the detail (I'm not interested in realism) (4) I like the way the trees and rocks are arranged. Nice lines and curves. Rather like Bonsai
Thanks for posting this!

Lol, I actually have killed some of mine from too much love...the poor souls were overwatered, or left in the greenhouse for too long. But its trial and error. I hardly ever have one die on me now.

Realism is actually one of my goals, this was the best of my ability at the time. Though I admit I'm not really interested in Photo-realism...Just heaps of detail.

I saw plenty of detail in this piece, part of why I liked it was because the leaves/flowers/needles and texture of the rock and bark are so detailed. and I really like the colors

by the way, I just noticed your signature question why indeed

Anytime is perfect for starting bonsai. All the time spent shaping and caring for them pays off in Years to come. To save time and Money, You could always cut-short unwanted garden shrubs and trees. Thats what I did with some of mine and now they are are My best looking ones, even though they will need years of shaping.

that's awesome dude i used to go to the nurseries and look for marked down trees around winter also one of the best things i found was to go to home depot since they always have plants and trees that are half dead that they are selling for next to nothing do you have photos of your trees anywhere ?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromattix In reply to GuanYinsTears [2006-11-01 03:07:47 +0000 UTC]

I hav't taken any recent photo's but I guess I have to because I could see how they change over Years. only a few of mine are old and impressive but most are only Young. But I'm not a really good photographer.
Since You mentioned buying them in Winter, here's another hint. It maybe hard to tell a deciduous tree from a dead one, If the tree has no leaves just scratch the bark on the trunk a little bit. If the layer underneath is green then the tree is still alive. if it is brown or grey then the tree is dead and won't grow back.

Sometimes however, the neglected trees often produce the most interesting trunk shapes, just dont get one too sick because it could end up dead later.

ah yes the bark scratching a good trick one my mother (the friggin plant swami guru master) once told me about i know what u mean about trunk i love how neglected trees often also have some crazy textures of bark or a more aged look i'd love to see some pics of what you have

I like the pink trees! they look like sakura (cherry blossom trees) from Japan

Chromattix In reply to Okunisan [2006-08-30 10:20:44 +0000 UTC]

Well You guessed very close, The pink-flowering tree is an azalea which originated in a similar climate to the cherry blossom and both trees flower at the same time of the year, and come in similar flower colour. Except cherry blossoms are larger tha azaleas when fully grown.

Thanks, I chose certain trees to make the colours bright, but realisic as They really appear at certain times of the year.
