Description I't wasn't until I was half way through My idea of a toxic planet that I realised that this started to look like venom from Lylat Wars ( a game that came out on Nintendo 64 around 1997 ) and ironically, the only sci fi game I played and enjoyed. Although that didn't even come into mind when I wanted to make a toxic, lime-green planet simply because I thought it would look cool.
In real life, the tempurature would be too hot for any living or man made thing to survive and the clouds would be made of poisonous carbon dioxide and sulfur and smother it's whole thick atmosphere, however I made the surface visible to make it more interesting.

Probably not as bad - in the game it seemed somewhat habitable

Same here! while I like many aspects of sci-fi oriented art, actual sci-fi games don't appeal to me much (many are too "serious") but Lylat Wars was an exception

Yeah, normally I don't adapt to sci-fi oriented games (many are too dark and serious) but Starfox made it Fun Lol, if I knew how to draw the actual Awings at the time, I probably would have oh well, if I ever decide to do a remake, I could add them

Thanks for faving too

Oh wow the Nintendo 64's Star Fox 64 Game so many 64's!

This is just purely spectacular in every way! The colors are so lively, with the mixtures of the dullish greens and bright lava reds. Wow, I can't even find the right words to describe this!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromattix In reply to ArtyLubear [2009-07-17 02:34:24 +0000 UTC]

Yep, it was actually called a different title Lylat Wars in some countries, mine included but same game

Glad you liked the colours, it can be tricky to get red and green to look good in art, thanks for the fave too

Hmm, I dunno - there could be lots of innocent animals on there if you do, get it on tape - it's not everyday we see a planet exploding

No animals on the planet Venom, just Andross and his army.

Zeraphalanx [2009-04-05 20:17:47 +0000 UTC]

This planet reminds me of the one I thought up called Terrex, which is roughly twice the size of Jupiter but it's not a gas giant. The planets thick atmosphere is pure miasma but strangely enough lifeforms exist on the surface of it. They depend on miasma as humans depends on oxygen to breathe. The miasma gives the planet a bright purple color so people have several nicknames for it like, the Posion Star, Purple Star, or the Violet Venom.

Totally love this art nevertheless though.

Chromattix In reply to Zeraphalanx [2009-04-06 04:50:11 +0000 UTC]

Lucky it's called science fiction since I don't think a solid planet twice the size of Jupiter would last, it would probably be crushed under it's own colossal gravity and weight before it gets even a quarter of the way there during formation still sounds like a cool idea though, especially with the eerie purple glow

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Zeraphalanx In reply to Chromattix [2009-04-06 04:53:32 +0000 UTC]

Of course it wouldn't last that long it be crushed under it's own G-force thus Sci-fi. All the impossible can be possible cause of it.

And thanks!

Hey, I'm really impressed about the nebula backgrounds from all of your works involving space and I have no idea how you did it, basically I'm more of a modeler and animator so may I ask, how did you do it? Dynamics? I'm using Autodesk Maya, any tips from the cg guy?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromattix In reply to wuahahaha [2008-08-23 04:02:43 +0000 UTC]

Lol, I don't have Autodesk or Maya, and at the time this was made, I had no 3D programs at all they were drawn in Photoshop, so yeah, they are 2D "drawings" of nebulae...I guess the best way to get such a result in 3D would be to first draw up the nebula in Photoshop (this is, provided one has PS experience too, since they can be tricky) and then save the image, apply it to a 2D plane in the 3D scene, set the material as "additive" so only the lighter parts show (no black edges) and then scale it up, and push it far off into the background

But if you want it animated and moving, then that wouldn't work, however most nebulae or so huge and change so slow that they can look the same for thousands of years, so animating a nebula in the background of some space/sci-fi animation isn't always necessary.

Nice gallery, you may have trouble with nebula cretaion, but I certainly couldn't model cars like those

Woah that's a fast reply 0.0 Thx for the tip, so I guess it still falls back to the old fashioned way, of putting a background image plane but in the first place, I had no idea how to create a good nebulae in the first place . My lecturer will be teaching us some basics on lighting the next semester, hope I can create as stunning art as yours, will keep watching and learning from you

Thankyou, and yep, this was made to represent the N64 game There were two ways to go to Venom, the harder, but "proper" way was where you had to fight Fox's enemies just before entering Andross, the easier way was where Venom was an actual stage, and the boss was that robotic rock-monster
