This piece conveys the typical winter feeling when your home, warm inside and you gaze out into the snow. Lovely. I especially like how you used white around the window (blue around the room and orange around the lampt too) to show the different kinds of light. Also quite a cute room and nice patterns

puffinpunch [2012-12-05 12:57:59 +0000 UTC]

Awesome! All three light sources sit where you'd expect them and the composition is great too. The reds might be a little strong on the bedside table. I'd expect it to look like that on the lampshade because its the light source and the red is sort of like a diffuse glow coming through the material, but you wouldn't get that on an illuminated object like the table or book or teddy.
I don't know what you did with the top of the doona cover but it implies the details really well. I like the painterly texture on the walls as well. I need to figure out how to do that.

ciaee In reply to puffinpunch [2012-12-09 09:35:46 +0000 UTC]

Wow, thank you for your detailed critique! Now that you've pointed it out, I do feel that the reds are a bit strong on the table as well. With the duvet cover, I simply slapped on a suitable pattern that I had found. As for the painterly texture on the wall, I used a customized smudge tool.

ooh, it absolutely gets the feeling of astonishment right, when you know you went to sleep in the normal world last night, and just woke up in deep winter wonderland.

critique... thats hard O.O its so cute already.
maybe one thing. its implied its snoying outside, but we dont really see it, and rendering the complete view out of the window probably wouldnt work well in this image. so we are left with the texture and color of the window. its already very snow-y, but the one solution thats even more snow-y is when you are waking up at dawn, when the sky color indicates there shouldnt be much light yet, but all the snow reflects so much that its brighter outside than it should be. this cool half-dark glow, to me, is even more typical of snowy mornings than stark white.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

ciaee In reply to gekitsu [2012-12-01 07:58:39 +0000 UTC]

Wow, you always write these long awesome replies.

Thanks for the critique about the snow! It really doesn't snow here where I live, so I'm not too familiar with how winter looks like through a window. I guess I'll need to be more diligent in finding references for my next winter piece.

gekitsu In reply to ciaee [2012-12-01 15:04:23 +0000 UTC]

you asked for input didnt you?

its looking winterish alright - think of it more of an idea, or input than a critique. someone else may find something else to be the essential winter thing. to me, its snow before dawn/after dusk.
