Description African Crowned Eagle Stephanoaetus coronatus at the San Diego Zoo, where the very first captive-bred Crowned Eagle was hatched in 1996 (this bird was one of the parents)! This large, regal bird is one of my favorite raptors. They're immense and gorgeous. They are also powerful predators, feeding predominantly on medium-sized mammals such as primates, hyraxes, genets, and duikers.

CROWNED EAGLES ARE SO COOL!!

The San Francisco zoo also has a crowned eagle breeding program (or attempt at one, since it hasn't been successful yet), but their eagles aren't on display. My sister & I are hoping that, as docents, we might be allowed to see them because, c'mon! Crowned! Eagles!
