Description Low leg above the Arabian Sea, summer of 2010.
The exhilaration of flight, a few hundred feet above water, doing a serious business. And suppressing a smile.

Β Flying jet fighters must be one of the neatest jobs in the world, well, at least when you're not getting shot at. It must be quite exhilirating, and I've always wanted to take a ride in one of them.

Β That's a Mirage, right? In the Ace Combat games that I've played, they are available, and I've flown them on occasion.

The jet doesn't move the pilot at all. The pilot stays in one place, and the jet moves the Earth around him.

Amazing shot. Did not know they allowed you to set up camera's in your cockpits. Looks like you are just so relaxed in this shot.

The pilots use to stick a GoPro above the instrument panel. It's an easy way to make some good shots because all you have to do is set the camera on full auto, taking a picture every two seconds.

That must be nice. Though for National Defense reasons I am surprised they still let you do that.

Well, there are no secrets unveiled with this kind of picture, and the system is fully automatic, so it's not a burden for the pilot, it not interferes with the piloting. As a matter of fact, he sometimes forgets the camera ! So there is no safety reasons either.
Officially, the hierarchy does not authorize this kind of picture, but knows how to play it cool because it gives a positive image of the job.

I see. It not just gives a positive image but a fun image. I would love to be a Pilot of the USAF. Sadly though that will never happen.

Hoping to see the FAF in Wales this summer for their yearly low level exercise...... Alpha jets, not the heavy stuff unfortunately..

Cigognes In reply to Albi748 [2011-06-03 08:02:33 +0000 UTC]

Well, the heavy stuff is doing real business somewhere around the world, like Afghanistan or Libya. You have to deal with the tiny Gadjet, as we call the Alphajet

ahah! never heard no one call the alpha jet that! i guess it kinda is...

It's a cute nickname. Every French fighter pilot learn the basics of military flying aboard the little jet. And once on duty with an operational unit, the same pilot have to deal with the Gadjet during mock dogfights. The little bastard turns real well and is a pain in the ass when driven by a seasoned pilot, even for the brutal 2000 or the lethal Rafale.

In portugal we have the german version of it. It's lacking some new avionics but it's a pretty nice jet to fly!
