Description Sorry for the title... It's Turpin again, the crazy warrior-archbishop from Song of Roland, in all his pencilled glory. Filling in and shading his vestments were the bane of my life for several weeks. He looks like he's about to go medieval on somebody's ass. Bad Turpin.

He's great! Reminds me of Philippe, Bishop of Beauvais – Conrad's second-cousin, who married him and Isabelle.

Wow! Sudden flashback to a book I read... well, let's keep the precise year unknown, but it's been a long time. I love G. A. Henty, but you can't precisely re-read AND expect to get through all (here calculating) 144 books as well. Anyway. 'In Freedom's Cause.' I love the thing. It's about the Wars of Scottish Independance, my favorite wars to study, although that about ties with the Napoelonic. Anyway, there was a bishop who was on Edward I's side. He went around capturing people, and being at important battles, and harrying things. The book is full of harrying. Now, in my nine-year-old mind, this was a strange sight. Naturally, I saw him in full vestements, carrying a sword, and chasing about Scotchmen. Thank you so much for drawing this.

Eeeee! I love it! The time spent shading was definitely worth it... the clothes are incredible! As always, your art amazes me! Hmm, I wonder if he was any kind of influence on Sweeney Todd's Judge Turpin....

Well, I've never seen Sweeney Todd, but Turpin does tend to be a pretty common British last name, for some reason...But thanks, I'm glad you think all that time I used to shade in the folds of his cloak couldn't have been better spent studying for midterm exams...

heheheh. yeah, this guy surprised me a lot when i read this book. he was like, LET'S KILL PEOPLE, and i was like, aren't you a bishop?

cillabub In reply to desertmoondragon [2006-04-03 03:01:38 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, Turpin's very cool with the whole let's do Mass thing, then slicing about a billion Saracens in half right afterwards. Very odd priest, that one, but very bad-ass warrior. I was so taken with the whole warrior-archbishop business when I first read Song of Roland that that's pretty much what I study now in the medieval history department here at Cornell (it's probably what I'll end up writing my thesis on--thanks for the inspiration, Turpin!).

No, don't worry, even though I've honored him with the nickname Turpinus turpis, I don't think he's much into little boys. Considering the looseness of attitudes towards clergy celibacy back then, though, I have a feeling he would consider full-grown knights to be perfectly fair game.

IdiomaticLogic In reply to cillabub [2006-04-03 13:59:07 +0000 UTC]

Ah, well, no one would begrudge an upstanding clergyman a few knights from time to time.
