Description Out of this darkness, I'll come for you.

This piece came from a few places inside my head, but mostly it's just experimental. I hadn't done a really dark piece in quite some time so I wanted to get back to that for a moment, but I also wanted to add a twist by throwing in an element not typically seen in portraiture, so I selected an old hand-drawn catacomb blueprint to go with this piece. The blueprint isn't transposed via Photoshop. It's actually drawn.

I guess the main feeling I get from this is somewhat Egyptian, as if the model (who, in this, is my dear Belgian jealous boyfriend ~Deemer ) is a pharoah risen from his own tomb. But at the same time I get a very modern, almost futuristic feeling from it as well, as though that pharoah who had fallen thousands of years ago has awoken in an age where maps can just be plucked from the air and projected onto nothing... like all those futuristic movies where you can interact with holograms. So, ancient meets modern, perhaps? Interpret it as you will.

This piece actually gave me a some trouble. I haven't done as much erasing on a piece as I did on this one in a long long time, and if you know anything about charcoal... it doesn't erase. At first I had kind of a rinky-dink background to this but it made the figure pop too much. I wanted him to be coming out of darkness, in a way, like a phantom of himself... so I blackened the entire background instead. I also had a bit more of the map stuff on the left but thought it completely threw off the balance of the piece. I like how the darkness flows from the upper left to the lower right. (Holy crap, and I talking about technical stuff here? I think I've been on dA too long. )

Anyway, hope you somewhat enjoy it.

Oh, and I forgot to mention... those swirly things on his left, beside his eye and on his neck... those are kinda tattoo type things that I just added in there for some atmosphere. They seem to blend in a little too much on the computerized version but... I guess that's one of the downfalls of submitting traditional artwork on a webside, eh? Of course it is! I'll stop talking now.

Charcoal on 90 lb. paper
18" x 20"
Please full-view. The small version is crap.

I totally really love this one. It is an instant fave. ^_^. Great detail all round, and its pretty much one of the best dark peices, as you mentioned, out there.

This is a really interesting peice. You're great at what you do. I love the little blueprints all around it.

As a not-artist, you`ll have to explain to me why you sell original pieces someday.

That aside,

What is there to explain?

I dono, I just picture myself as an artist of your calibur (my drawings consist of stick figures and beavers that look cats), and I`d want to keep my art.

Many people don't realize how large my work is, or how much of it I have. If I hung up every single drawing I've posted on dA, whether it be sold or still in my posession, I could probably wallpaper a few rooms from floor to ceiling.

At first it was extremely hard to sell my work, but I firmly believe that a part of becoming a professional artist is learning how to part with what you create. Now when I sell an original I see it both as a huge compliment as well as another reason to create a new drawing. After all, if you continue to sell work but refuse to let the amount of work you own at any one time become depleted, you'll never stop creating.

What can I say? I'm rapidly running out of words to describe your work.
How much charcoal do you go through?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

cinquain In reply to SeeleVerloren [2006-05-29 17:02:38 +0000 UTC]

Um, not that much actually. I've learned how to rub the powder around a page to cover a lot of area so... not that much at all.

'This piece came from a few places inside my head'

heh.
fuck. i like that. i like that very much.
however, i like experimentation even more. mmmmmm. so much more.
we as artists should always endeavor to get up to our necks in the ass
of experimentation.
goddamn. otherwise, art becomes one boring blowjob after another.
then sooner than later you begin losing all sensation.
god. how horrible would that be?
i can't even,...won't even,...imagine that.
makes my soul hurt.
right?
pft. what am i saying.
of course you agree with me!!
oh. don't even fuckin' say it.
i heard you twice the first time.
better late than never.
unless it's better never than late.
cause that's bullshit.
and i hope you know that.
if not,...
than lucky you.
or,...
maybe not.
i can't even,...
won't even,...
imagine that,...
as well.

ps-
nevermind.

The way the black eats away at the figure is very cool; going along with that egyptian thing, it's as if he had been dead for many years and is staggering out into the world.
I love the math-y background, too.

You read any of Neil Gaimon's The Sandman series? I immediately thought of Dream on seeing this picture, which is why I clicked on it (I have a slight obsession ). I'm also reminded of Death by the make-up/tattoos under his eye. But whether it's Dream or some pharoah guy, it's really beautiful so I've faved

Oh yeah and if you haven't read any of The Sandman books, do! They totally rock! Oh and if you have read them and you fancy doing some fan art... I'd be really interested to see what you come up with!

An old friend of mine gave me one of the Sandman comics eons ago... and I just looked this very second to check if I still have it, and I do. It was years ago so I don't remember what it was about. I'll look through it.

And I'm glad you like it. Thanks.
