Description Out of this darkness, I'll come for you.

This piece came from a few places inside my head, but mostly it's just experimental. I hadn't done a really dark piece in quite some time so I wanted to get back to that for a moment, but I also wanted to add a twist by throwing in an element not typically seen in portraiture, so I selected an old hand-drawn catacomb blueprint to go with this piece. The blueprint isn't transposed via Photoshop. It's actually drawn.

I guess the main feeling I get from this is somewhat Egyptian, as if the model (who, in this, is my dear Belgian jealous boyfriend ~Deemer ) is a pharoah risen from his own tomb. But at the same time I get a very modern, almost futuristic feeling from it as well, as though that pharoah who had fallen thousands of years ago has awoken in an age where maps can just be plucked from the air and projected onto nothing... like all those futuristic movies where you can interact with holograms. So, ancient meets modern, perhaps? Interpret it as you will.

This piece actually gave me a some trouble. I haven't done as much erasing on a piece as I did on this one in a long long time, and if you know anything about charcoal... it doesn't erase. At first I had kind of a rinky-dink background to this but it made the figure pop too much. I wanted him to be coming out of darkness, in a way, like a phantom of himself... so I blackened the entire background instead. I also had a bit more of the map stuff on the left but thought it completely threw off the balance of the piece. I like how the darkness flows from the upper left to the lower right. (Holy crap, and I talking about technical stuff here? I think I've been on dA too long. )

Anyway, hope you somewhat enjoy it.

Oh, and I forgot to mention... those swirly things on his left, beside his eye and on his neck... those are kinda tattoo type things that I just added in there for some atmosphere. They seem to blend in a little too much on the computerized version but... I guess that's one of the downfalls of submitting traditional artwork on a webside, eh? Of course it is! I'll stop talking now.

Charcoal on 90 lb. paper
18" x 20"
Please full-view. The small version is crap.

I can't claim to know what the heck you're talking about in technical terms towards the lighting, but whatever it is, the lighting's *good*. The figure stands out very well, not forcefully, but still quite emphasized.

His nose is a bit odd on his left side of his face (our right), but that's about it. Mewl, pretty.

nice work...the tattoo-like things are cool..!

though, in my opinion, i think the blueprints should be darker near him, so it gives an impression of darkness, or dark presence?

good job. you've thought a lot about space an filling up the dark background with something other than plain black. ::

Darker? I don't quite understand how you mean. Either way, thanks.

i meant, your portrait might look more deeper, more darker if you had not made the blueprints so white...

still like it

Really really great, using a serious amount of charcoal there!!!
I'm not sure about the blueprint in the top right, it takes up a large portion of the head space, maybe a little further away, I can see it needs to be in the corner to balance the piece but it may just out a little far to the left, just my opinion.
It's still a fantastic pick that kicks 7 shades of crap out of most things on dA!

Yeah. I'm generally not that happy with the way this came out. The blueprints seem somewhat off no matter where I look or what angle I look at them in, but an experiment is an experiment, right? That's what these tests are for! But thank you. I'm glad you like it.

That's cool, can be a bit scary giving some people an opinion on their work, they think your attacking them or something!

Beautiful contrasting elements and details here. I admire your work so <3
Those lips are looking fantastic! The shadows, from the top left to the bottom right really are affective as you mentioned.
I think the catacomb prints would be more affect with a few more, less sharp ones in the background. (like as if melted into the background) But it looks great as is Gorgeous.

another wonderful job! i agree with you on the movement of the darkness, very powerful. I also like the suttlety (sp?) of the Eye of Ra on the pharaoh's eye, it's a nice liitle touch.

great job, keep up the work!
