Description

'There was rumor amongst the trucks about an American brake van, 'Caboose' as they call it, that always seemed to cause a stir when mentioned.

'We don't talk about Bruno!' They would boom when Rupert would bring it up. One day, Rupert would find out why.

First it was when he saw Judy the breakdown crane.

"We don't talk about Bruno." She chided quietly.

"I know, but what could he have done that was so terrible?" Asked Rupert.

"IT WAS A DISASTER!" Cried out Jerome who had just woken up.

"JEROME!"

"He deserves to know! I'm just gonna tell him!"

"We don't talk about Bruno!"

Judy stared hard at Jerome, then at Rupert. Finally she conceded.

"BUT, it was my welding day-"

"It was our welding day"

"We were getting ready and there wasn't a cloud in the sky."

"Not a single cloud in the sky..."

"Then Bruno rolled in with a mischievous grin-"

"Then came the thunder!"

"Are you telling this story or am I??"

"I don't know much about Bruno," Said Clarabel, "But I know the trucks don't seem to like him."

Have you ever actually met him?" Asked Rupert.

"No. I did once, however, over hear him muttering and mumbling. I'm not sure what he was saying, but he seems like the superstitious type."

"I've seen him," Said Austin.

"He's really big, I think he's American." Added Artie.

"What else?" Asked a wide-eyed Rupert.

"He's painted red, like blood, and he has rats running around in his compartments." Said Artie hauntingly.

Austin laughed. "Yeah, and he can see into your dreams and feasts on your screams too~"

The coaches laughed, failing to notice the uneasy look on the brake van's face.

"He told me that the life of my dreams would be promised and someday be mine!" Sang out a truck as it was lowered from the coal tipper.

Rupert hadn't cared much for this particular truck. Ever since it was painted pink as a form of punishment from The Fat Controller, long story, it always seemed to wear on the brake van's nerves.

"He told me that the power of us trucks would grow. Like grapes that thrive on vines~" Continued the naughty pink truck in a sing-song voice.

After a whole day of asking, Rupert still had no idea who the infamous caboose is. Some talked about trains jumping the rails, others spoke of disfigured engines contorting in ways they shouldn't, but he did know they all blamed the American.

The very American that now stood before Rupert, who could hear everyone's comments buzzing around his mind like angry bees.

Bruno looked down at the panicked brake van, confused by Rupert's terrified look.

"Why did I talk about Bruno? I never should've brought up Bruno..." Muttered Rupert.

"Are you okay? You look kinda sweaty." Asked Bruno.'
