“I should have seen this coming! I’m not even surprised about it!” Bertie grunted “It always happens when we hang out with you!”
“Oh, I’m sorry! And here I thought you’d enjoy this!” Ian replied sarcastically, glaring at his friend.
“Guys? I don’t think this is the time to argue…” Kaden said softly but neither of his friends was listening.
“This has gotten to a point where being kidnapped IS my regular Saturday night!”
“I didn’t plan this!”
“It doesn’t matter!” Bertie snarled “it’s always something! Some stupid asshole wants to kidnap you…”
“Who are you calling stupid?” one of the masked men tying their hands grunted.
“This is a private conversation!” both Ian and Bertie snapped while Kaden gave the guy an apologetic look.
“I don’t think you’re stupid Mr. Kidnapper” he spoke meekly
“…Or you go meddling where’s none of your business, or picking fights with the wrong people! I don’t even know why I keep hanging out with you!”
“Maybe you shouldn’t!” Ian yelled followed by a grunt as the man wrapped a rope around his elbows and pulled them together making him arch his back “Ouch! Not so tight, jerk!” he glared at his captor and tried to shove him away with his torso.
“Find something to gag them, these brats are giving me a headache!” his partner picked up one of Ian’s t-shirts from the floor and started ripping it into rags.
“I like that shirt!” Ian shouted but could only watch as the men tied the rags between Kaden and Bertie’s teeth “Can you at least tell me why are you kidnapping us?” he asked one of the two masked men as he approached with the rag for him.
“We really don’t care about fatty and skinny” both Kaden and Bertie let out indignant grunts “but our boss has business to settle with your dad so you’re gonna be a bargaining chip!” of course! It was always because of his dad; Ian lowered his head and for the first time he gave his friends an apologetic look that even made Bertie soften his grimace.
That moment didn’t last long and soon, Ian and Bertie were carried over the men’s shoulders while Kaden was made to bunny hop in front since his legs were tied together. They must have taken care of the school staff since the corridor was empty, a pity since Ian made sure to make it as hard as possible for their captors, kicking and screaming with all his might but soon the three were taken outside and tossed inside the back of a white van.
“Hope you’re comfortable kids! Because it’s gonna be a long ride!” one of the men spoke and slammed the door shot.
The three boys scooped around the van, Kaden merely laid back, writhing his wrists and wiggling his feet; Bertie just laid down, glaring at Ian, still silently blaming him for their predicament while Ian kept kicking, violently struggling and twisting his body in a futile effort to get out. They heard the motor starting and soon the van started moving. Ian knew they were in trouble, he had no idea where they were taken them, the ropes seemed too tight and the knots out of their reach! His friends seemed to have come to the same conclusion, Kaden’s breathing was growing heavier while Bertie hanged his head down in defeat. No! It wouldn’t end like this! He got them into this mess, there had to be a way to get them out- did the door just opened?
The three teenagers turned their attention to the doors, they were swinging back and forth with the movement of the van! The three boys hurriedly crawled towards the ledge and looked outside, the road, flanked by the woods, stretched below them, getting lost into the dark towers of the school in the horizon.
Ian glanced at his friends and jerked his head towards the road getting alarmed looks from them; Kaden gulped down and looked at the moving road warily while Bertie outright refused to jump, shaking his head.
“MMm hnfm phn nnmp!” Ian urged them
“Nrm mnn nnphnnm?” Bertie shook his head, there was no way he was jumping tied up, not into hard, rough asphalt! But he also knew that might be their only chance, if only they could reach the grass at the sides of the road.
“Gnmph!” Kaden exclaimed, his face lightening up “PHhm cnrfmph!” he started shifting his body until he got on his knees, the other two boys gave him a confused look before they realize what he meant, the road that lead to the school wasn’t a straight one, which meant…
They managed to get on their knees just in time for the van to turn to it’s right along the road, it was a small window in which they could clearly see the grass within reach but that was all they need and following Kaden’s lead, the boys jumped out of the van.
It hurt a lot. Ian found himself rolling down a slope, feeling twigs and pebbles scratching his body and he was sure he would be covered in bruises by the next morning. The three landed at the bottom of a ditch and froze, watching as the van drove away. They just waited in a tense silence until it was well out of sight. They did it! They were free… mostly! The three let out simultaneous sighs of relief and collapsed on the ground, for a moment relaxed, looking at the full moon, experiencing the joys of having escaped those kidnappers.
Kaden was the first one to move, getting closer to Bertie and rubbing their faces together until they were able to dislodge the gags “We did it!” Kaden exclaimed happily bouncing as he moved to help Ian with his gag “we got out in one piece!”
“If you call a few broken bones one piece…”
“Don’t be so negative!” Kaden smiled “this has to be the best sleepover ever! Right Ian?” the two turned to their friend who, despite being ungagged, was unusually quiet
“I’m sorry guys” Ian finally spoke looking at his dirt-covered feet “Bertie was right, it’s my fault you got into this mess, it’s always my fault! If you don’t want to hang out it me-”
“I didn’t mean to” Bertie replied looking away “I was mad-”
“Come on Ian!” Kaden scooped closer to him “Yeah, since we became friends I’ve been kidnapped, threatened, held hostage and probably scarred for life but who cares? That has certainly made my life way cooler than it could have been! Being your friend makes it worth it!”
“Yeah” Bertie added more subdued “I have come to terms that being tied up twice a month is part of the deal, though I wish you would listen to me more often and stopped actively looking to get in trouble!”
“I can’t promise anything” Ian smiled sheepishly
“I know…” Bertie sighed and the three friends lay down again, watching the night sky, enjoying that moment together before inevitably they would start arguing again about how to get out of those ropes. All in all, it was just a regular Saturday night for them.
