Before Kris ever got adopted by Asgore, she actually had a really rough life (her biological parents were extremely awful to her and the orphanage didn’t treat her any better) and when arrived she was even quite scared of the monsters at first, so Frisk and Asriel decided to cheer her up and tried their hardest to make Kris comfortable in her new home (especially since Frisk is also adopted herself) Asriel in particular sees a lot of himself in Kris so he’s quite protective towards his new little sister
