My first one was a gif with transparency but it wouldn't work. 
Later I did a gif for my "Vector Hyllus Frost and Spices" piece, but again it wouldn't work... so I just uploaded it elsewhere and put a link in the original artwork description ><

maybe you can tell me also how you could add a "preview" version as thumbnail. 
I found that quite interesting with the picture half finished and half sketchy ^^

For the .gif's thumbnail, you should make a separate image (just crop/cut the part of the picture you want to focus, save as .jpg).
After you upload a .gif here at Deviantart, it will require preview (the small pencil icon on the right , click on the red text "Change preview image")

I watched your work, and really don't know why it didn't work just try upload it again as regular deviantion... Sorry can't help : (
