Description I discovered SIP (Strangers in Paradise by Terry Moore) just a few days ago and it's AWESHUM.
Can't believe I never heard of it until now (or maybe I did, but never checked it out?)

These characters are and I love the storyline, humor and facial expressions. And reference to a certain warrior princess!

I'm buying the comics as soon as I have the money for it. Erm... might as well put it on my Christmas wishlist x)

Terry Moore is one of the people we all should bow down and worship for creating the awesomeness that is SIP.

I don't even know these characters, but they look really cute in this art style, especially the one on the right. Good job!

Don't see SIP fanstuff much anymore, good to be reminded of it. Looks like a couple of folks have already mentioned that it seems to lose people as the story progresses... different people at different spots, but it seems everyone adores it from the beginning.

Goes a little too much into mafia/gun stories, becomes less funny/credible... yeah I understand why. Though it's not enough for me to stop wanting the whole series

Yeah, I was buying/reading it back while it was still coming out (I'm assuming it's over by now) and got up to collection vol 11 which is about where it lost me. I just didn't feel like keeping an eye out for it any more, the anticipation was gone. I may get around to reading through the rest sometime, who knows. Really, it's the classic problem with any series based on sexual tension. To keep people hooked you have to maintain this delicate balance between implying things will work out eventually and keeping a reason for them to not quite do so... and that balance gets harder and harder to keep. Eventually most authors let the relationship work for just a second and then come up with a reason for it to go sour again, rinse and repeat, and those are the spots where people get lost... which, I think, is what happens in this series.

The series has been out so long it's in trade paperback volumes now, which means basically multiple issues all rolled into one big book. Even still though, I think it goes to like 7 or 8 moderately thick volumes. My friend sells them in his comic shop, but i think he was ordering them for someone....not quite sure. Haven't technically actually read the series yet....was on the fence about it due to lack of gf excitement....but if you like it, I'll definitely give it a shot. Awesome stuff!

i heard of them first in... 01 or 03, got most of the comics, and all the paperbacks. Mr Moore tells a very enthralling story, yeah.
I guess he is/was a writer for a Marvel series called Runaways, and there's another comic called Echo he does.

excellent work!

Ninnik [2011-06-14 23:50:26 +0000 UTC]

Yay, SiP! I loved Strangers in Paradise back in the day, but unfortunately, I kinda lost interest after a while. If I remember correctly, the whole thing just became sorta "out there"/lame after a while, and I didn't recognize it as the comic I liked anymore. I couldn't take it seriously anymore (as far as it was meant to be taken seriously, anyway).

The art is great, though, and so are the characters, and the comic itself was really something special and different when it came out, so I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who asks. And hey, whaddaya know, totally CANON "slash"! I can't remember reading the ending, though (HAS it even ended yet?), so I don't know if Katchoo and Francie ended up together or not.

You've read the "High School!" issue, right? How much of the entire series have you read?

Your Katchoo is adorable, but I must admit I don't really get a Francine vibe from your Francine; she doesn't really look like her. Maybe it's easier for you to nail Katchoo's look because she's more similar to the other girls you draw than Francine is? I dunno. *shrugs* I like their outfits, though, and the attention to such details as Katchoo's thick eyebrows, and their very differing breast sizes.

clover-comics In reply to Ninnik [2011-06-14 23:59:29 +0000 UTC]

I went pretty far with some scans I found on the net. It does kinda get out of hand once or twice, and sometimes you couldn't take the comic seriously anymore (which in those moments, I mostly liked it) (that Xena chapter for example!)
Didn't finish it, but I'd like to have the actual comics in my hand to take the time to read and finish the series correctly. Francine and Katchoo better end up together!!
Yeah, Francine doesn't look as much as the character, as Katchoo does. I could've made her more chubby for instance. Too used to draw skinny girls all the time!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Ninnik In reply to clover-comics [2011-06-15 00:33:28 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I didn't mean the humorous stuff, like the quirky, fun little Xena story. It was more some of the stuff that was supposed to be SERIOUS (at least some of the stuff that popped up after a while) that kinda made me roll my eyes and alienated me a bit. The comic was very...90's (duh, but I dunno how else to put it), I guess, and sometimes it just seemed kinda...well, melodramatic rather than dramatic, and sorta pretentious. In hindsight, parts of it (not all, just parts), come across to me as reading a bad fanfic. >___> Been a long while since I read it, though, so I dunno what I'd think of it now. It's a mixed bag. I have both fond and not so fond memories of SiP. It's definitely one of the greats of the 90's.

Yeah, Francine, while cute, is definitely not a little waif/elfish girl, like the ones you usually draw. Tall as a tree and struggling with eating issues, that's our Francie.

Arianod In reply to Ninnik [2011-06-15 05:02:15 +0000 UTC]

Same thing here. I enjoyed SiP at first, when it was just all crazy fun; but when things started getting deadly serious, I couldn't take it seriously any more. I think the author got out of his depth. Still, Francine and Kachoo are cute as anything and deserve fanart, so yay! ^^
