Emily had taken her time driving Skull to the stables. She had briefly spoken with the owner, Soren. He seemed laid back and probably wouldn’t mind if she was a couple minutes late. Skull waited eagerly in the trailer. He had noticed none of his show tack being brought and assumed the best. After about a half hour of driving they had reached their destination.
Code of Arms Stables; an odd name to say the least but the place supposedly had some fancy horses. Emily led her stallion inside and walked through the aisles to find Soren. The barn was filled with many different breeds. Skull was excited. Most of the barn was filled with mares. There were a few stalls left for the stallions.
With each mare they passed Skull became more excited. Which one would it be? What would she look like? At last! Emily found Soren cantering over fences outside. The mare was a gorgeous grullo, roan, pintaloosa. Skull had it dead set in his mind that she was the mare. Soren noticed the two newcomers and trotted over.
“Expected you to be a little later than this.” He dismounted and shook Emily’s hand. “You must be Emily. I’m Soren.” He smiled and patted Skull on the nose. The mare nudged Soren lightly. “Oh and this is Desaree. She’s not the brood. That would be her mother.”
Emily greeted the stable owner and his horse. She followed them inside and they discussed the breeding as Des was being untacked. Cascadia was being prepared by some of the stable-hands. The two horses would be let out into the large pasture. They would be looked after long enough to make sure neither tried to kill the other.
Skull glanced around nervously. He was too excited to be waiting this long. He pawed the ground angrily and snorted. Emily held him tight. After Soren put away his other mare they walked to the indoor arena. Soren gathered the brood and a teaser pony was brought out after her. Skull grew more excited. The mare was gorgeous. She was also ready for him.
The horses were walked out to the pasture. When they reached the gate and loosed the horses they both galloped off. Cascadia tossed herself about playfully. Skull was just following for the chance to mount the mare. Cas didn’t pay much attention to the young stallion. She jumped and bucked and rolled. After the third roll she settled down.
Skull took his chance. The cavalor trotted up to the now settled mare. The two sniffed noses. Cascadia let out a light squeal. The first few times, she would stomp or snort or squeal or try to bite Skull. He was a persistent horse.
After about ten minutes he was able to begin the rest of the courtship. He poked the mare in her stomach. He rested a hoof on her back. He nudged between her legs. He smelled for her readiness. Finally the mare gave in and she was mounted.
