...One does not simply know why the pigeon crossed the road. xD Now this photograph is simple but serves its purpose very well. It almost looks like the pigeon is walking sideways and the photograph looks titled.

After looking at this for a while longer...I've come to digest the masterful technique here. While it may be a "simple" photograph, the technique is masterful. Especially within the extremely close and ( almost) claustrophobic view you captured of the animal, which I believe takes quite a bit of skill. The way in which the background is blurred really makes the pigeon stand alone as it's own entity in a way. Almost everything about this photograph works so well.

The entire concept is simple but it does its job and serves its purpose well. And the way in which you executed in creating this shows that you must have some skill when it comes to photography. Now with all that being said...while this doesn't necessarily strike me sentimentally...it does show me that you do know what you are doing. And you should be proud of this.

No problem! I posted a few of my own pieces on your forum to be critiqued as well.

Photography is an artwork that tends to plague more artists than fruits it bears, but CommanderEVE has a firm grip on this form of expression. Again, she displays a competent sense of the camera, as well as knowledge of image properties such as placement, unity, etc. When it comes to the technical nature of this piece, there is stellar composition with only the minutest of faults (maybe a bit too much blur, but it keeps the eye moving, so it isn't the end of the world). Actually, in an image that one would normally think is quite empty, she managed to create enough movement that the space became a part of the image instead of acting as extraneous filling.

However, the lack of emotional impact or interpretative power makes this simply the capturing of wildlife in a life setting. Does that demote it of some quality? No, because artwork should be viewed from its purpose, which in this case was simply the raw observation of an animal. Because the standards of the critique require aspects of emotion and interpretation, I am forced to include them. Other than a lack of emotion or interpretive power, the originality, though there, was not absolutely apparent. But, one should, at the same time, not expect so much from a piece like this, and simply view it as a remarkable capturing of a bird on the prowl (not to mention the impressive dynamics of the image).

Really, this was a wonderful photograph that definitely displays her technical skill, and though it lacked an emotional foundation, it fulfilled what it was meant to fulfill in high quality. For that, I say this picture is worth faving, especially if you consider yourself an aspiring photographer, because there is much you can learn from a deviation like this. Well done!

Photography came to be slightly easier than most people because of the fact that I have an understanding of technology and of Art. People these days think they can pick up a camera and automatically think they are photographers.

Β

Because I was trying to lay flat on the ground which was very close to a pound, I had to be careful not to let myself or my camera gear slip. And for some odd reason I find it hard to squat, so the photograph came out lopsided. :3

Β

Thank you so much for the critique! What do you want be to critique in return?Β

And what separates you from others is that you are constantly seeking improvement. Β Many amateur photographers start out enthusiastic but then quickly become content, but you are always raising your own expectations. Β That's what makes you professional.

The lopsidedness actually helped I think. Β I gave it movement and an interesting perspective to something that could easily have been plain and uninteresting. Β Hey, half of photography is turning misfortune into a delightful surprise.

It was my pleasure, and no worries, I just wanted to lend a helping hand to someone who wanted a critique Β

I am in a limbo of both content with my artwork and the opposite, meaning I like it, but I always feel as if it is not good enough. And so, I just keep pushing myself. On top of that, I learn even though I am not practically drawing, I just think about it and observe as I watch and listen a lot more then I talk. Not trying to seem edges, it is the truth. xD

Β

Indeed, I liked it also; this is why I uploaded it. Β

Tawny Owls have been known to reside within parks. But I do not think they would bother pigeons, owls often get mobbed by other birds such a crows. Β

Eating crow isn't fun for anyone, so I can imagine getting attacked by small, disgusting birds can be for them owls

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

CommanderEVE In reply to Jester-of-the-Clown [2013-08-20 23:20:41 +0000 UTC]

It is also because when they land in a tree full of other birds, they get very on-edge. Although, larger owls eat other, smaller owls.Β

Even when they are not gliding, they are silent, even when taking off. It is because they have fine hairs a long their feathers that breaks the turbulence.Β

I am not going to lie, I strained trying to take this photograph, and that is why it is so lopsided. Because I tried to get as low to the ground as possible without laying down. I had to be careful not to let my camera fall into the water which was right next to me on my right.Β
