UPDATED CHARACTER SELECT SCREEN: machriderz.deviantart.com/art/…People who have been with me most of my Deviantart career knew this was coming.
It's summer, and I have more time than I thought I would. I'm not going to be posting wallpapers all the time like before, but occasionally, I can slip something in. Well, here's what I'm slipping in.
My roster decisions were not based on what I wanted, but what I thought would work with the other revealed newcomers (Villager, Wii Fit Trainer, Mega Man). Enjoy!

Thank you, both for the admiration and the constructive criticism. 
Nabbit was my thinking that Nintendo would push for some current characters, especially with Mario's current cast being those from the original game. Nabbit would represent the newer age of Super Mario. That could easily be any other Mario character - Rosalina, Bowser Jr, Paper Mario, Toad, etc.
Ghirahim is a must for me. He was the lead villain in Skyward Sword and has an extraordinary fanbase. He has perfect moveset potential, too. The only way he wouldn't make it would be if Nintendo decides against another Zelda newcomer or if a new character from A Link Between Worlds takes his spot.

Understandable...I just would expect characters that have had more than one appearance...(a reason why i am not a fan of those who ask for geno) for example nabbit could easily be replaced by bowser Jr...who is still fairly new and could have a decent moveset...I thought a good character would be kamek...since he is a recurring Mario character but counts in the yoshi series

Shy Guy could also be interesting. Now, I would pick either Rosalina or Paper Mario.

Yeah shyguy would be interesting but what would his moves be...plus why does he get permission when he is only a minion...and there are like 50 billion of them...if anything go with a Mario character that is a character and not a species...I'm sorry if I'm being negative and what not...rosalina I agree would work great because she has appeared in both main games and spin offs. (mario kart) is not a clone and is new...good job there

Well, Shy Guy does have many forms (Stilt Guy, Flame Guy, etc) that could be referenced in his moves. I think Rosalina would be better either way.

TONS better than most I've seen. My only "Huh" character is Nabbit. Substitute him for Pokemon Trainer (Red or Leaf) and you'd have it perfect. Especially Ridley and Mewtwo.

In honesty, this is the best Smash Bros fan character roster to actually make sense and thats why I love it!

This is one of the most ubsurd roster selections I've seen in the last three years since they announced it. Some of the characters do not make any sense at all, ex: waddle dee meoth, and I really don't belive that sonic will rejoin smash bros. what I'm really trying to say: DO NOT get your hopes up

I never said I was getting my hopes up. I lost expectations for Smash Bros. a year or two ago (thank you, SSBC).
Waddle Dee and Meowth are popular Smash Bros. candidates. Who would you have in mind otherwise?

Well I didn't mean to say " don't get your hopes up" like that so sorry about it, it's just I've seen a lot of these roster fan arts throughout the years and I'm honestly not a big fan of those types of fan art, and to be honest I really don't know who else be considered Smash Bros. fighters. So sorry if my comment made you upset, it's my fault for being rude

It's alright.
There is a lot of mediocre fan-art out there, especially for Smash Bros. I try to make mine different by using less recognizable resources. A lot of the time, the art they use is so recognizable or they put the image together so poorly, you can't even consider the characters.

Nabbit has grown popular in the Mario universe very quickly - he's already playable. Seeing that Sakurai is interested in unique characters, Nabbit seemed like the obvious choice. Toad could still be a part of Peach, and Bowser Jr. has more or less had his time.
I can't say for sure, but I believe I read that Meowth was considered for the original Smash Bros. on the N64. Seeing that Red and Blue Pokemon have always been appearing in the past, I don't see Meowth being impossible. Lucario isn't really popular anymore, and his inclusion in Brawl may have just been because of his movie that was released shortly before. It's an either/or situation.
Alph, again, is an either/or. I think Olimar is in Pikmin 3, but not playable, so Alph kind of came out as the dominant new character in the Pikmin series. I don't really care which gets in - they could both be in for all I know!
Waddle Dee was only included because he's a Kirby character, and he's more popular than the other three potential Kirby characters I normally consider: Prince Fluff, Magalor, and Gooey.
Donbe & Hikari is the most bias choice on this roster.
Waluigi almost seems inevitable. With the inclusions of Mega Man and Villager, him and Ghirahim, I think, are the most likely newcomers. He completes Wario, and that battle we've always wanted to see where the Mario Bros. take on the Wario Bros.
As for who you wished for, I'll be honest: I considered every one of those. My goal here was to find a unique balance in the roster, and to do so, I couldn't add every character I wanted to. You can always look at other rosters I've designed! They have all of those and more.

One Nabbit is not a main Mario character. Go back to Super Mario Bros. you have Mario - Luigi - Bowser - Peach that all we need.
No new Mario character was added in Brawl though why. Because Peach and Bowser were originally suppose to be in 64 but cartridge couldn't allow the game to have 18 character which also include Mewtwo, King Dedede, Pit and Meowth.
Alph is not going to replace Olimar just because he new.
Waddle Dee is not that important to Sakurai. Sakurai only wanted Kirby, King Dedede and Meta Knight who make up the Kirby Series.
Donbe & Hikari I don't even know where to begin with them lol
Waluigi isn't that important he only does sports, karting and partying.
