everyone seems to love this. I drew this in 1983 -- 20 years after hippie culture was long gone. Its even longer gone now, and still, people love this pic.
Thanks very much for your comment. I really appreciate it.

It's so old now! I had no idea. Hippies aren't long gone. My mom and I are hippies, I know a lot of hippies in Chico California etc.

Well, I don't know if I am. I'm vegan, I recycle, I eat all organic, I hate violence (except cartoon violence!) I love mother earth, I listen to Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones etc. and I dress hippie. So wouldn't you say I'm a hippie?

No. I would not say you are a hippie. You would have to have grown up in the 60s to be a hippie.
You are a person who knows what hippies were like and is trying to emulate some of the things that hippies did.
I was a hippie. Its a decade and an era. It was a phenomenon. Now, its just people who want to adopt some identity as their own. You did not live through the rebellion, the love, the magic, the awesome birth of music that still rocks the house today.
I was born on Jimi Hendrix birthday and I grew up in the 60s. I went to see Jefferson Airplane and Jethro Tull and many other bands of the era live. I grew up singing Joan Baez songs and Joni Mitchell and Dylan. I bought peace beads and wore them when they first came out.
You are copying an era long gone, and have decided to adopt the culture. It is not the same as being a part of the birth of that culture at its origins.
You can call yourself a hippie if you want. And many people will believe you.
I am not one of them.

Okay, your right, I'm not a hippie, but I love the hippie culture, and is that so wrong that I tried to adapt to a hippie lifestyle? I wish I was a teenager in the mid 60s, but unfortunantly I was born in the early 90s. Atleast I'm different than most people my age. I don't like pop and rap music, I don't dress like an idiot with my pants half off etc. Even if I'm not a hippie, I can still keep the memory of the real hippies alive today by remembering them.

no one said what you were doing is bad. It's fine. You asked if I thought you were a hippie. I just explained why I did not.
I think your identity should come from a deeper source than a label. I never fit in anywhere. I still don't. People called me a hippie when I was young. I never called myself one. I called myself a freak -- but I meant it in a good way. I was always very different from everyone else, not because I was trying to be different, but because I actually WAS different. I simply did not think like the people around me. I have no idea why. It continues to this day.
You like anime and a lot of things that are very much a part of your current day culture. Some of the things you don't like -- such as certain genres of music. One does not need a label to define oneself.
Myself, I like rap. I love 2pac. I love heavy metal -- from Black Sabbath to Otep, there are many many metal bands that I enjoy. 40 below summer, Mushroomhead, messhuga, Il Nino, Slipknot, Godsmack, Skindred, Machine Head, StaticX,Powerman 5000, Rob Zombie, Rammstein, Metallica and many many many other metal groups..
Most mothers my age do not enjoy this kind of music. But I also like country (which I hated up until I was 50 and one of my students who was a metalhead showed me how to like it). I like Lifehouse, The Calling, Vast (a really really great individual from Austin. You should check out Vast). I like literally hundreds of genres of music. I love bluegrass and folk.
My four kids and I have learned so much together, including a deep appreciation of music. Now my youngest child is 15 and starting college next year. We homeschooled, but not in the traditional way, because I homeschooled many other people's children also. I founded a school for character and true learning.
So life has taught me there are no simple answers, and that labels are seldom adequate unless they are on jars or cans of food.
With that, I'm going to go get a cup of coffee. Find your true self -- it won't be in a label. It will be in your heart.
much love
Aunt DJ (what most of the world calls me)

Thanks for the respone, it's really cool! I always felt different, however, I wanted to be like everyone else and never fit it. In fact, the only reason I like anime is because I want to have more freinds.
I hate rap, but I love every metal band you mentioned.
But I hate being a freak. People never accept me for who I am. How do you deal with it?

You become strong and clear. You do things for your own reasons. You dont worry about what other people say. In 10 years time, they will just be beginning to discover who they are. Some may not even do it until they are 50.
Being different means being yourself and standing strong on your own. You don't do things because other people approve of you -- you do them because you truly like them.
That has been my path my whole life, and my children are the same. They are very independent individuals and don't follow the herd. We are not conformists. It is tought to be independent, but it makes you a more whole person. You are not dependent on the approval of others for your decisions and actions. You stand on your own convictions and do what you believe in because it is right, not because it is popular.

well actually, you do not constitute 1 percent of the earth's population.
As an individual, you are one percent of 100 people.
So, I still am on a course to meet the other 50 percent.
much love and learning to you. Pray often, think deeply, and know that God is real.
