Description ~Lukas watercolors and Lumocolor Pencil (Love it, inking before painting is so much better!)

Still love Kois, majestic motherfuckers
Working on my watercolor and inking skills. Got problems with shading and have still to learn a lot about color choosing, it doesn't look like they are under water. But I'm happy with it anyway, giong for a simple illustration was more satisfiing than the bigger things out of my skills I did a while ago.
Constructive critique welcome

This really caught my eye. Well composed and well executed. I like the color choice for the two fish. Simple, yet enough to distinguish one from the other. I also like the fact that the blue water is not a single shade of background blue but a variety of shades that help give the water a sense of life and movement. Nicely done!

From ProjectComment
Now first, excellent painting of the classic Asian symbol for peace and harmony. You did very good on the use of watercolors on the water itself. The painting you did on the koi and the lotus they are circling around also spot on. The choice of colors to represent the two koi shows that they are different, yet similar in a few ways. I do like how you were able to mix and change the colors on the two koi such from black to red/orange or vice versa.

I don't even have express the great detail you put on the them; I like the details on the fins such as the frills that show off its beauty, the fact they appear very similar in pose which represents their apparent equality and ability to work together. Due to how small the lotus was made, I can understand why it lacks in greater detail since the smallest concept can be difficult sketch. Now the water made in watercolor is very well done; it seems as if it reflects lights off the surface and we can see the transparent ripples surrounding the lotus and the koi seem to be either rising to the surface or just swimming very close to it.

Now the koi represent harmony and balance which is the same as the Tao symbol of the Yin and the Yang. It may also represent the Zodiac Pisces since its two of the same fishes. Overall, this a great piece and I wouldn't change a thing about it. Great job.

this is awesome! screams Pisces to me which is my symbol. I would think adding a reflection over the backs of the koi, and maybe a ripple around the flower would force the illusion that they are underwater. I would be happy with this one!

Hi, I'm here from ProjectComment !

So, I'd just like to say, this looks amazing! You're quite good at watercolours - I couldn't even attempt to do the shading like that with them! The way you blended the blues and greens in the water looks very realistic, and the colours on the koi are nice as well. The colours and textures on scale patches also look pretty real! Your inking is great - nice consistent line width, and smooth edges. The way you used the smaller lines for the wrinkles help emphasize the outside lines nicely, so good job on that! The flower also looks great -  I the bright colour contrasts the background nicely. The whole yin-yang feel you have going on with the fish is nice, and the piece is well-balanced. However, I do have some criticism - the fish don't stand out very much from the background. Maybe if you used a darker blue or green directly behind the fish, or if you used grey instead of blue to shade the fish? I'm not sure; just my opinion, you don't have to take me seriously ^^ The other criticism I have is really tiny, but it's that the pink flower has a lot of blue overlapping on its outside edges. If that's stylistic, then that's cool. Anyway, this piece is really nice, and I think you did a great job. Keep up the awesome work!

Have a great day!

Thank you very much, thats nice to hear Yeah darker spots on the background would add more depth and you got me on the petals, next time I'll use masking fluid

This is lovely! The symmetry is very nice and the background is broken up with those very light changes in shade just perfectly. The inks do well for the fish and they're very clean. I think a more simplified lotus in the center would have pulled this together a little more neatly, but as it stands, it's a great piece! Would look great on a platter.

"majetic motherfuckers" koi fishes in a nutshell!
ahem... on the piece itself:
This cant be more watercolor, I dont have a highly trained eye, but I think this was done irl? I just like how it blends into looking slighty digital on the background, but the fishs lineart and colours give me the traditional art feel, a nice mix between both worlds, they also give me off the vibe of being in armony, and the colour selection for them does kind of "synch" in my mind and appeal to my senses, maybe adding to a filter for bumpmapping or doing optic distrotion similar to taht of water reflection and difraction would accentuate the whole feel of the pic, but then again its beyond my knwoledge if you want to do it or would end "tainting" the intended style and overall composition, I also find a bit "off" in my own view the small yellow like smudges or marks around the brushing in the waterm then again, watercolors are like this and not supposed to be "perfect" which gives the pic a natural feel, then again thats just my opinion, in conclusion I love this pic a lot! faved!

Regarding shading; have you tried showing the forms with no lines, just shading?
