On another one of his patrols, Danny came across several ghosts ransacking some downtown areas of Amity Park. It had been a long night, so Danny was eager to deal with these ghosts and just be done. However on the chase through the chaos of it all, they managed to elude Danny and vanished out of sight, and out of sense. Danny grumbled, it's another one of those nights...

....

The title was perhaps inspired by some rough nights I've had at work lately. I'm hardly the greatest story teller, but figured I should have a little something to help describe the image.

This image was a bit of a warm up piece, to help me get back into the swing of digital art (one would be surprised how many of the simple things about digital art they forget after not touching it for just a few months!). It is nice to finally do some more art after just not having the time from my math and physics heavy college major.

Overall, I'm not too terribly happy with this piece. I spent far more time on it than I was planning. A lot of experimenting went into this image so it was essentially a learning tool for me. I did learn quite a lot with this experimentation, so I suppose that's what counts ^_^ Nearly everything painted in this image was out of the normal painting routine for me. There are plenty of errors in this, as I became exhausted of working on it, though I am more than happy to receive critiques on anything in the picture. I'm not sure if I'll actually go back and fix the errors, but I suppose it depends. I can always use the critiques for future reference (:

This image was drawn and painted entirely from memory, which given the results, I won't be doing again! Too much effort with too little a reward in this go, but still a great learning experience in seeing where my limitations and improvements are!

Time: Worked on and off for past 3 weeks. True time taken unknown

I have two questions

1. how do you get such smooth lines? mine are always jiggly and unappealing to look at.

2. how do you manage to get the hue from light sources like the windows on the buildings and the lamp post?

Each time I listen to the song "Some Nights", and look at the lyrics, it's like it's describing Danny. I'm telling you each time I listen to it, I can't help but compare it to him. Look at the lyrics and see for yourself. [link]

i was a huge fan of danny phantom once. somehow i forgot it existed, i found it somehow and watched the movie again. i remember how awesome it was the times from danny phantom where one of the best times i know
but it's sad they don't give it on tv anymore

My interest wavered from time to time with Danny Phantom as well, but it seemed to have really impacted me, because even though it's gone, and I had a difficult time tolerating the third season, it's just been a show I could never completely move on from it
It is sad. Nickelodeon programming is so strange now. I've watched the new Nick show, Legend of Korra which just premiered this passed April, and they don't replay the show, when they used to replay the newly premiered shows all of the time back in the time that Danny Phantom was a new show, so I have no idea what the deal is.

dont ever think your terrible, in alot of ways, you do better than butch hartman, though i find drawing like human characters is easy, after a little practice, but backgrounds look the hardest.....and ghost monsters....

Coronadofwb In reply to KyleWhisper4 [2012-06-07 07:56:57 +0000 UTC]

I could hardly dream that I could ever be better than someone as talented as Butch Hartman in any way, but truthfully, I draw Danny Phantom as well as the detailed background because it is just that hard for me. It's incredibly challenging, and it has taught me a lot artistically doing so. I could never draw people, and drawing Danny Phantom has allowed me to understand human anatomy this well. I know someone's talented when their unique style can teach me something so indepth The backgrounds have taught me a lot of patience! For a fun, quirky style, it is tedious, but fun. It's always a treat to try and put oneself behind the artistic eyes of the original creators More than anything I was just disappointed in the amount of time something like this took, nearly a month I worked on it, yet it still looks simple and rushed to me, and I just eventually tired of working on it. But after not having done any paintings in a year I find this piece isn't half bad Thanks for the comment! And I, err, sorry for the long comment O_O I'm all rambly tonight it seems! XD;

lol its kk. Yeah, I agree. When I draw Danny Phantom style drawings, it's a little bit of a challenge and I seem so eager to finish them, but that's why I try to be patient on them and not rush them, or they will become very bad. Characters are quicker to get done but the backgrounds take a lot longer.

Psssht! From memory, after so long? You're still quite the mastermind *^_^* I am partial to anything with a moon, though!

Speaking of the moon, I love the detail on that and on the plank (although the squiggle on the plank threw me off a little). And the curvature of the spine made me look twice, but I don't see a problem with it because you do tend to give this sort of art more curves and flowing lines than the stick-straight lines of the original.

Whatever you think, it's lovely work Always a treat to see something from you!

This is such a lovely comment, I'm not sure how to thank you in a same strong way Thank you thank you! I'm happy to see my touch wasn't too lost, as I've been more concerned about my photoshop ability recently (doing some professional graphic design now!). I really appreciate your comment and input ^_____^ I really do appreciate, more than I can say, when folks remember me and my work. It gives me that artistic umph and motivation to keep working and improving my work And it has been so terribly long since I last heard from you! I hope things are going well and beautifully for you! If I'm not mistaken, the last I heard things were rather rough for you, especially at your work? Hopefully that's all passed. You are so deserving of much better things! ^_^

Firestar9mm In reply to Coronadofwb [2011-08-17 01:26:21 +0000 UTC]

Nonsense! You deserve it *^_^* I only wish I weren't so sporadic with my comments; like the Red Queen said to Alice, it takes all the running you can do just to stay in one place. I dream that someday I can be back on this site regularly with the sketches I've been piecing together turning into something more substantial. I'm just nightmarishly busy; two friends got married this summer and one more's getting married in two weeks, and you know how it is with that sort of thing--suddenly it's no longer "her wedding" but OUR wedding and I'm finding myself doing all these lunatic things like searching for sci-fi cake toppers and planning joint bachelorette parties. Cry Havoc! And let slip the dogs of war. *^_~*

To answer your question, as bad as things were before, that's how good they've become *^_^* It's kind wishes from nice people like you I have to thank for it, really; good wishes always do the work. I've had a job I adore for over a year, I've got my own place again, and I'm in good shape and better spirits lately. And thank you for asking!

What about you? Professional graphic design, you say? Congratulations! That's truly something to be proud of--I hope you're having fun with it!

Ahh, I'm so happy to hear things are going so well for you now! You're a survivor, and triumphed for sure! That's so true by the Queen XD I've become terrible at responding to comments, as you may have noticed. Things are not so well in my life (also why my art postings have nearly come to a complete halt). Hope you can get into art again with little hassles, but I understand how that can be, so no rush! Much luck with the weddings! I have a friend getting married in December, but I'm not in any part of the wedding outside of being there simply as a guest. Hearing how much of a hassle it's been for you, can't say I'm heartbroken that I'm not more involved, because I'm certainly not, lol!

So very delighted how things have turned around in your life! I pray dearly that they stay that way for a long time to come ^_^

Thank you! It is exciting! Something I can add to my professional portfolio as well ^___^ So gleeful I am! <3 I've also been pestered for commissions, so it's like my art life took a big leap forward all of the sudden with this professional graphic tutorial I'm working on, and two commissions. I might die from the business, but it'll be a good way to go XDD! Just too excited for words !

I'm sorry to hear things have been bumpy for you lately Hang in there. But I AM glad to hear you're working in a medium you love. Few people are that lucky; enjoy the ride! I smile to think that I'll see the work of my talented friends here at DA in credit rolls someday, the way I watch 80s cartoons I loved as a child and see that Glen Vilppu has storyboard credits in them. I've no doubt it will happen, don't you think?

Coronadofwb In reply to Firestar9mm [2012-05-11 05:24:11 +0000 UTC]

Nonsense! You've worked hard, and been through so much, and the very least I can do is commend you for it I know it's been some time since I've been on, and since you wrote back to me, but I still hope things are still going up and up for you!

I remember saying I had these commissions and even that tutorial I was going to do and put in my portfolio, that all fell through. I'm not even sure if I should mention why. I'm not surprised, and it was for the best. Oh well, just gotta pick myself up and start over.

I'd be excited to see that as well! I do believe some people I know will make it big someday. Not sure if that'll ever be the case for me as it's not exactly the field I spent the last 6 years studying, but ya never know Thanks for the encouragement, as do hope things are well~

Oh, we're here and there : ) I'm writing more than I'm drawing these days, but I've also taken up a martial art, so I'm exhausted a lot and fall asleep anywhere I can. I hate waking up and realizing I've got nothing done, but I do love sleep too hahaha.

I remember someone saying to me once, "Well, when you fall off a horse you've got to get back up and shoot it, right? Or something." I believe in you. Whatever you do end up doing, I know you'll do it well.

I've sorta been doing the same. I just recently graduated from college and the last few years I seldom had time to draw, and getting back into it has been a bit more of a doozie than I hoped, but I just gotta do it if I want some results. It sounds like things are very fulfilling for you now (: Haha! Sleep! Can we ever get enough of that thing? XD

Well, that's a new one to me XD It reminds me of a catastrophic 4-wheeler accident I once had, survived unscathed and hopped right back on the thing, so I suppose I can say I have the guts to do pretty much anything. Who knows what I'll end up doing, I suppose as long as I'm doing something and enjoying it, that's the best I can do

It is, believe me it is x_x You're at about the age I was when I started to improve at a quicker clip, changing from my familiar style as a kid and onto to things new, but you'll get the hang of it! (I'm well into my 20s) Don't be afraid to try new styles and things you feel might be difficult. A good challenge here and there is great for artistic knowledge and improvement

I still hope I can be, at least more active in the coming years, but still be a member here on dA. I plan to never leave this account. At your age it took me quite some time to get a handle of certain styles. I was 17 when I started drawing DP, and it took me 2 months to get a hang enough of the style to where I could draw it without the help of references. Just keep working at it, and use all of the references you need. I used references all of the time when I was learning the style, and would even copy pictures to see how well I could put the picture I was seeing onto paper. It's challenging to do that, and it was great practice. I'd copy a picture, and then I'd draw more images just from memory regardless (never using refs no matter how badly I wanted to), and if I found I was struggling more than I should, grabbed another image and did the same thing, repeat repeat (:

I am still astounded, every single time I see one of your works, at how well you can get the style down. It looks like a frickin' screenshot! Yes, there are probably some errors in it, but honestly, I can't tell where they are. Except perhaps for the fact that the moon's not a PERFECT circle. But, in that case, who cares? Circles suck anyway.

It's good to get a new drawing routine going; it leads to improvement. Or, sometimes, the new style is worse (as I have experienced quite a few times). However, that's clearly not the case here. Great work, as always!

Coronadofwb In reply to Denkomaru [2011-07-17 09:25:30 +0000 UTC]

How ridiculous is it that I think I'm still terrible at this style? That was intentionally done as the background style is very exaggerated and purposely disproportionate, as this allows more focus and depth of the characters (x Glad you noticed!

Any practice, with good or bad experiences, is always good, because the important thing is is that the artist is learning, and with that automatically comes improvement and artistic wisdom, and that was the entire point of this painting; a learning experiment (:
