The MP-5SD silenced submachine gun was developed by the German Heckler & Koch (HK) company in the early 1970s. It is a modification of a popular MP5 submachine gun, intended for special operation forces. The "SD" stands for "Schalldampfer", German for "sound suppressor". This weapon was reportedly adopted in 1974. Eventually the MP5SD has been adopted by the US Navy Seals and a number of other special forces and law enforcement units from all around the world. This silenced submachine gun is actively used to this day. It proved to be a high-quality, reliable and accurate weapon.

The MP5SD comes with integral non-detachable silencer. The silencer is made of aluminum. The MP5SD is a blowback-operated weapon that fires from a closed bolt and has a roller-delay mechanism, similar to that of the Heckler & Koch G3 automatic rifle. The MP5SD is chambered for the widespread 9x19 mm Parabellum ammunition. This weapon can use standard ammunition, rather than special subsonic rounds.

This weapon has a shorter barrel than the original MP5 submachine gun. The barrel has 30 ports, that divert escaping gasses into the suppressor. As a result the bullet has lower velocity and leaves the muzzle at subsonic velocity. The bullet does not generate sonic shock wave in flight.

Trigger units of the HK MP5SD are available with various fire mode options, including semi-auto, full-auto and 2- or 3-round burst firing modes. Modern versions have ambidextrous fire mode controls, mounted on either side of the receiver. Cocking handle is mounted at the front of the receiver, on the left side.

This silenced submachine gun is normally fed from the curved 30-round magazines. Early models used straight magazines. This weapon is also compatible with Heckler & Koch 15-, or 100-round capacity magazines.

Most popular version of this weapon has a collapsible sliding buttstock. Though there are versions with fixed synthetic buttstock or without buttstock.

The MP5SD comes with diopter-type sights that are similar to other contemporary Heckler & Koch models. The sights consist of front post and rear diopter. Maximum sighting range is 150 m. Various red-dot, optical or night sights can be mounted on a quick-detachable clamp. Effective range of fire is up to 75 meters for the versions fitted with buttstocks. Version without buttstock is accurate to a range of only 25 meters.

Variants

  MP5SD1 version without buttstock.

MP5SD2 version with a solid buttstock.

MP5SD3 version with a collapsible metal buttstock.

MP5SD4 version without buttstock and new ambidextrous trigger mechanism.

MP5SD5 version with a solid buttstock and new ambidextrous trigger mechanism.

MP5SD6 version with a collapsible metal buttstock and new ambidextrous trigger mechanism.

MP5SD-N1 version of the MP5SD5 for the US Navy. It has a so called "Navy" ambidextrous trigger group, tritium-illuminated sight dots and fixed buttstock. Furthermore it has a larger suppressor, developed by the US Knights Armament company. The design of this suppressor allows the weapon to be fired with water inside. This feature allows to use this weapon in the water and exiting from the water. This silenced submachine gun has a modified cocking handle to account for a larger suppressor.

MP5SD-N2 version of the MP5SD6 for the US Navy. It is similar to the MP5SD-N1, but has a collapsible metal buttstock.
