So... how many of you recognise this guy?
It's certainly been a while since I've shed any light on him! I think the last time I drew him was 2004... anyway, this is Xsal (pronounced "Zahl") from my Alternate Arador series... that I never finished writing nor shared anywhere online XD;;; So sorry, you can't read his story!Β I always enjoyed drawing Xsal in the moonlight, I don't know why... there's just something about the ambient lighting that suits his broodyness I guess! XD;
This picture was a great exercise in digital painting and less saturated colour schemes! I really enjoyed working on it - might do a few more Alternate pieces as I seem to be in the mood at the moment!!

I love how utterly creepy you can make scenes and characters. Those tree branches and roots are beautiful, I love the twisted ends. The way you see the bumps of his spine, which is something that utterly squicks me, but really adds something to the feel of this picture.
There's so much emotion in his face, even without seeing his eyes. You can tell there must be so much to this character, even if you've never shared it with us. I love the wings, they look heavy and strong, like they could support him if he chose to fly off that cliffside.

He is a fairly broody character all right! He was often found saying "bite me" If he didn't care for the conversation!

The moon was trickier than I thought it'd be! I used a lot of photo references which helped a lot!

Haha! Thank you! His tattoo is actually normally on his other arm... but I really wanted to draw it so I switched it! XD;; I figured if I hadn't drawn him in 10 years no-one would notice XD;;;
The moon was a bit of a pain and took up more time than I would have liked!! I used lots of references and painted that before I did anything else - as it was such a large focal point I wanted to make sure it was right! I started by just using the elliptical select tool in photoshop, then kept my sharing in that circle. When I was happy with the inside I just put a bit of a glow around it and it satisfied my moon needs! XD;;Β

Oh I so know that feeling. My character, Dia, has a kind of tribal tattoo on her right arm and I never seem to get a chance to show it because either a) she is facing the other way or b) she is wearing a long sleeved shirt.
