Description For anyone who hasn't seen it yet, 's Color Theory Tutorial is a MUST READ.

=purplekecleon drew these Jirachis! She suggested color palettes to work with, so to really challenge myself, I practiced using them all. They looked normal at first, but they sure were unique combinations! I had fun using colors in ways I was uncomfortable with!

Which is your favorite and why? Also, this is not in scraps because I genuinely want some critique, comments, anything! I just want to improve.

Okay so I hope these are helpful!!

#1 has sort of a cool yet harmonic piece. The background makes the jirachi stand out. The highlights also give it depth.

#2 is very warm and suggests a sunset/forest environment. The colors draw the eye across the piece and towards the center. (this is my favorite)

#3 is very balance and has harmony in all the colors (hope that made sense O.O). It gives a nature feeling to it.

#4 Is very interesting it is very warm yet it give a alarming feel. The jirachi stands out thanks to the smooth shading and harsh light areas.

#5 is a very cool painting. It gives off a cold feeling and suggests a frost or arctic environment. The white "wisps" in the background also add to this effect. The Jirachi stays out from the darker background.

These are all very well done!! (Im working on this myself so im not an expert, but I hope it helped!!!)

how many layers did you use for this?

I like #2 because it draw the eye toward the center and the red compliments the other colors in the painting

I like the third one, it looks nice and I like the Vibrant colors. The fifth one looks like Space or Ice Jirachi. That would be such a cool type of Jirachi.

I have to say #3 is the best for me. Jsut right colors for my eye.. Are those only palettes she has shown?

Yeah, it seems that way! It's still a pretty good practice, if I say so!

i liked them all...you did an awesome jub. but in my personal opinion color is a little bit "forced" in number 4..doesn't seem to have harmony.

'tis so awesome how they all have different colour palettes, but none of them look out of place *o*
3's proabably my favourite - greeeeeen 8D haha And 4 looks particuluarly awesome somehow too I think the colours look more balanced? or something I don't know, it just looks great haha
But I think they all look amazing - you've handled the colours so well X3

I like #3 and #4 the best, even though you did an awesome job with all of them. ^^
Now, here I go~

#3- I like this one because the pallete is very harmonic, almost leaning to the monochromatic, and the cold, deep background makes Jirachi stand out. It would be "just another jirachi" if the coloring wasn't so well-done.

#4- Is my favorite because the shading is very dramatic, and the light source is very solid. I just think that you could smooth the shadows a liitle tiny bit; Mainly in it's arm and belly. I think dramatic shadows are easier to work with the light source, making it more correct.
As for #2, for example, the pallete is awesome and the lighting is soft and pleasant, but I feel the light source is a little uneasy.

That's my opinions, I hope it's somehow useful.

crayon-chewer In reply to AxlRosie [2010-11-08 22:06:03 +0000 UTC]

Ahh, I see what you mean about #4. I seem to be giving the arm a bit more dimension than I really should be, therefore making it seem somewhat "lumpy." I find it amusing how some people either hate or love #4 because of the dramatic shadows! Guess that's what makes this world such a diverse place to live!

I knew this exercise would be helpful! Thanks for your comments!

I can't say which is better as they all have their own feel and their own mood.
1 kinda has a mysterious mood in the way you've colored it, 2 and four look more firey to me, 3 has a natural look, and 5 has a mystical feel... It looks like you've practiced using different light sources, too.

Can't say it's much of a critique, but hopefully my impressions of it can help! ^^

Wow. I really like #3, but I guess its too "ordinary-looking" (for a jirachi that is).

#1 seems to be for a forest setting, #2 is a volcano-like setting (and jirachi looks "evil here") and #5 gives off some celestic feel XD

Okay, this is epic. D: I personally love the first one actually! <3 But I also like the green leafiness in the third one, and the bright moon(like)light on the
Jirachi on the last one. The second one looks like it's floating above lava. XD

On three, you kinda got a classic forest light, which just automatically draws my attention.

Also I like orange.

I know what you mean! It's so hard to stray from what's familiar, but you should definitely try this exercise! It's quite refreshing to use someone else's color palette, and by "forcing" yourself to make it work, you learn something along the way!

givememyrefund [2010-11-04 13:04:05 +0000 UTC]

I absolutely love #2. Maybe I'm just weird, but to me, it gives more of an evening/dusk feeling, like when the stars come out, and since Jirachi is based on a star... yeah. That, and I really like those colors together and worked like that. #4 has that same feeling, but #2 seems more dynamic.

's tutorial is really awesome. I hope I can apply it to cel-shading, though, since I'm not really the best [digital] painter xD You did a really good job, though!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

crayon-chewer In reply to givememyrefund [2010-11-08 22:10:13 +0000 UTC]

Haha, I know what you mean! It's good to vary it up sometimes, as I was originally just a cel-shader as well! I'm trying to find a way to incorporate cel-shading into digital painting without it looking too flat. You should definitely try too! I bet you'll come out with something truly unique that is "yours" in the end!
