This sketch you've done of this dragon looks very nice and stylish, my friend.

I see you've really taken an interest in mythological creatures lately. I've been into Pokemon myself as drawing subjects.
I believe most people's experiences in the fantasy starts somewhere with dragons; if not fairies, elves and mermaids. ;D
Ever seen Spirited Away? Definitely brings to mind Haku; except he could fly and not swim. But he has a lovely curve to him along with the detail on his scales and heather like vertebrate.
I use refs for backgrounds too. I need to focus on them more though since backgrounds for me are afterthoughts as opposed to the subject. Gotta break that dirty little habit. But it seems like you meshed the dragon with the background nicely here and seemed to have a plan to flesh it all out.
Ah charcoal....haven't touched you since college. XD I'll be moving out of my dorm soon so I should experiment more with traditional mediums in open spaces.
Keep on drawing; you're getting better. ^^

I guess they provide more ideas for me . I did buy This Dracopedia book: The Bestiary. It has all kinds of mythical creatures in it.  Dragons are one of the most popular fantasy creatures, so why not?
I have indeed seen it. One of my top favorite Hiyazaki movies(Along with Howl's Moving Castle and Castle In The Sky). I can see how this guy would remind one of 'ol Haku.
I'm the same way with backgrounds. After I finish drawing the characters I then try to draw the background around them. Most of the time I'm lucky if I add a background at all. I always get kind of impatient when trying to think/draw a background. This pic is one of those rare instances where I put one in…and it actually come out good.XD
I never liked working with charcoal sticks in my classes. They were too messy for my tastes. That's why I prefer the pencil ones. I bet you'll be glad to be moving out of that dorm. I'd like to see some traditionally done pics from you.
Thanks so much. I feel like I'm improving a bit too.
