Leporid-like (class of hare and rabbits) creatures, but with longer legs that are adapted to walking. Long and thin tails are adapted for balancing in a sprint. Eyes are mostly black or brown, though rare colors such as blue or grey have also been observed. Full-grown Visibabas can be up to 25 cm tall and almost 40 cm in length from head to tip of tail. Females tend to be slightly smaller, about 23 cm tall and 37 cm in length. Patriarchs and Matriarchs, such as the one depicted above, can be even larger.

Fruits, vegetables, grass, seeds, legumes. Leaves and bark if starving. Strictly herbivorous.

Population
Small but stable. Unable to quantify in the wild due to rarity of sighting. Many have been raised as pets/companions, with the current living population at approximately 600.

About
The Visibaba is a mysterious group of creatures found in Lumeria. First, they are rarely sighted as the creatures only leave their expansive burrows and dens in the case of a snowstorm, under which they are able to safely avoid other predators while foraging. Current research suggests that these highly intelligent creatures live in family units led by a patriarch or matriarch that gather and share their food. Females are known to reproduce once every year, and produce litters of 4 or 5 young. The kits take about seven or eight years to mature to breeding age.

Visibaba are famous (and infamous) for their high intelligence and sentience for animals. They often avoid gijinka settlement, though sometimes, kits have been left on the doorstep of some unsuspecting gijinka. These kits often grow up understanding gijinka speech, and possessing a portion of general knowledge and skills, such as reading and arithmetic. Many of these Visibaba remain with their new adopted family for the rest of their life, though some have mysteriously left or disappeared at some point.

Due to their special status, Visibabas raised β€œin captivity” must be registered with the Lumerian government, and the owner would need to undergo a bit of interviewing before being deemed able to raise a Visibaba. Visibabas are also only allowed to enter gijinka society strictly if they have been abandoned or strayed from their family. Keeping a Visibaba that has been captured or trapped would be illegal, and the act of capturing or trapping in itself is also illegal. While hunting for consumption of the animal (basically for animal products such as food, pelt, etc.) has been made an exception, Visibabas have been infamous for leading hunters to their deaths after their family has been captured. As a result, very few hunters are willing to hunt for them.

The above picture is an artist depiction from hunter description of a Visibaba patriarch.
