Description I'm gonna post this 'cos I'm fed up of it now. I've done the background so many times and it ain't really coming out how I want.
I'm trying to learn landscapes and bring the background up to the quality of my animals. I really should use ref! I do look at odd ref, but I should copy a background until I know what I'm doing.
It's not too bad, just so bloody basic. It's not the same when made up, especially as I don't have enough experience of landscapes.
I may return to this and add some of the foreground details that I intended to, before I got so bored of it. I'm worried that I will completely mess it up, so I'm going to shelf it for a while. I can feel my inner self wanting to scribble the lot out, so I have an excuse to bin it.

More negative ramblings, next painting. Will I ever be happy with one of them. Stay tuned.

This is very cool looking ...literally and you did awesome I think with the background with no reference to pull from

Cheers. I should change that write up. I quite like it now. I wrote that, when I'd just finished it and was a bit fed up of it.

We are our own worse critics, I think. I can see nothing wrong with this painting. The animal is of course excellent and the background makes me shiver, because it evokes feelings of cold and is very well done. It seems to me the only other thing this pic needs is to be in my favorites.

I do actually like it now. I always do these write ups straight after painting. I was fed up with it, by the time it was done. This was the 4/5th version of the background.

very nice.
Only thing that bothers me is the wolf's anatomy looks stunted especially with the hind leg area. The perspective might be off either there or towards the mid torso. Adjusting values might help.

I do really like the rocks .

Silly girl. His legs are short because they are slightly buried in the snow.
The contrast was greater before I put the blizzard over him. It's not as misty as I wanted, but it was for this reason that I didn't fade it even more. I didn't want to lose him completely.

silentlily In reply to crhino [2008-02-14 16:21:16 +0000 UTC]

I wasn't talking about the legs I was talking about the body. I meant the hind legs around the hip area which is why I was talking about the torso. .

blizzards do loose contrast.

This looks awesome!
In a snow storm, the background vegetation would look just the way you painted it.

This is going to my favs!

crhino In reply to Ravenhaven [2008-02-14 02:18:59 +0000 UTC]

True. I feel that it needs something though. Maybe something in the foreground.

Ravenhaven In reply to crhino [2008-02-14 05:13:30 +0000 UTC]

I like it as is. If you add another element to the foreground, it might conflict with your main subject. I usually used an piece of tracing paper to make sure it works before I paint it on the canvas.

crhino In reply to Ravenhaven [2008-02-14 15:15:39 +0000 UTC]

True. I have tried certain things already, branches etc, none worked.
I tend to photo it, then mess around in a digital programme. Much quicker and easier, if you have one.

i like it..it has a mood and a feeling..so its a little simple and basic- not every piece has to be an epic story!! and the background is fine-it kinda looks like that on a snowy day!

Cheers. You can't always find the exact ref though, plus there is the copyright problem.

nellaf In reply to crhino [2008-02-13 15:50:52 +0000 UTC]

yeah, I know.. try looking for stock photos here on DA, I always find some good reference photos that way

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

crhino In reply to nellaf [2008-02-13 17:44:28 +0000 UTC]

True. There is more of a chance of finding something good on here, but I'm still reluctant to involve someone else's work, even with permission. You never know what might happen in the future and people can fall out. Maybe I'm being overly cautious, but I have lost a lot of money in the past, through copyright problems.

nellaf In reply to crhino [2008-02-13 18:12:20 +0000 UTC]

good point... Well, good luck with backgrounds in the future, though I really don't think there's much to improve about your work, as most of the pictures look like photos already

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

crhino In reply to nellaf [2008-02-13 18:24:26 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. I WILL get there. It's just frustrating, as I can paint the animals far better and easily than the rest. It'll come though. I've hardly ever painted landscapes and I need to learn some tricks.
I remember the day that animals suddenly became easy to do. The same will happen with the backgrounds soon and then whahey! I shall be on the road to fame and fortune, hehe, yeah right.

That title is 'rubbish' and should be changed asap.
I think the background looks fine, but then again you want amazingness2 in everything you do. Which is understandable.
And all that would have been solved if you'd found a ref.
Don't be stubborn

crhino In reply to EuroFoxx [2008-02-13 13:49:06 +0000 UTC]

It is, isn't it. It reflects my angst of the moment though. I will change it when inspiration hits me again.
True. You hit the nail on the head. It's not that I refuse ref, more that I search for it and sometimes I don't find exactly what I'm looking for and I get impatient to get on with it. I know this is a silly thing to do, because the pic usually ends up taking longer anyway and it looks over-worked as well. I also don't like to copy exactly, because of the copyright thing, although I think copying a landscape would be hard to copyright. How can they prove I wasn't there too?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

EuroFoxx In reply to crhino [2008-02-13 14:40:55 +0000 UTC]

exactly to the last bit...and if you incorporate a bit of multiple landscapes, well, how are they going to prove anything's theirs, and not an imaginary place you made up?

I can see what you were going for in the trees, and I don't think it looks bad at all. Snow, sleet and rain often fall all at once, so things that far off aren't easy to see. I like how you still left the highlights on the branches.
