Description Les voici les p’tits "Bleuets"                         These here, these little "Bleuets"
Les Bleuets couleur des cieux                      These Bleuets the color of the sky,
Ils vont jolis, gais et coquets,                       Are beautiful, gay, stylish,
Car ils n’ont pas froid aux yeux.                   Because they are not afraid.
En avant partez joyeux;                              Merrily, go forward
Partez, amis, au revoir!                               Go on, my friends, so long!
Salut à vous, les petits "bleus" ,                  Good luck for you, little "blues"
Petits "bleuets", vous notre espoir !             Little "bleuets," you are our hope!

~ Alphonse Bourgoin, from Bleuets de France, 1916.

The bleuet de France is the symbol of memory and solidarity, in France, for veterans, victims of war, widows, and orphans, similar to the British and Canadian remembrance poppy.

In the language of flowers, the cornflower symbolises delicacy and timidity, and indicates that a message has a pure, innocent, or delicate intention.

The cornflower – like the poppy – continued to grow in land devastated by the thousands of shells which were launched daily by the entrenched armies of the Western Front These flowers were often the only visible evidence of life, and the only sign of colour in the mud of the trenches.

At the same time, the term "bleuets" was used also to refer to the class of conscripted soldiers born in 1895 who arrived in the lead-up to the second battle of the Aisne, because of the horizon blue uniform worn by French soldiers after 1915.

                                                                                                                                                             ~ Wikipedia

That's an interesting analysis but I think you are right. Photographs work well with harmony or conflict. You feel this one has both...

...but 'beauty' is always in the eye of the beholder

When I was a child there were many cornflowers growing in the fields, but now I see them rarely, sometimes in organic agriculture.

I could say the same about poppies in English fields. Modern herbicides have made them rare, although recently we seem to have been more reserved and occasionally you see 'red' fields as one does in France. This cornflower was also in France...

In parts of Lower Austria we have lots of poppies, the Waldviertel is famous for it.

I assume farmers don't like them but they are wonderful plants creating red swathes amongst the crops, as are the cornflowers

It did sort of. Requesting for the group over the last couple of weeks I have seen all sorts of weird and wonderful effects with photography!!

cricketumpire In reply to BGai [2016-10-29 08:16:02 +0000 UTC]

It would be good if I could predict the effects and even plan for them     A lot of my captures have great background blur and subtle soft colours or even bokeh - I admit to it being a complete fluke     (e.g. "Yin and Yang joined...")

There are very abundant in France, as are poppies but the UK seems to use herbicides to almost eradicate both.
....it's sad we don't get to see them so much

It was only when I did a little research into the poppy as a flower of remembrance that I found the information about the 'Bleuets'

Thank you for the positive comment...

A very gorgeous shot! I love the isolation of the cornflower amidst the blurred foliage.

cricketumpire In reply to Flight-Level [2016-08-23 08:25:19 +0000 UTC]

It did take a number of attempts to get that effect along with a decent composition. Cornflowers seem to work well with the unripe green cornfield but poppies much better with the pale gold colour of the ripe grain heads. Compare and contrast this one with "Lest we forget...". I was trying for the same blurred effect there but failed

I misread that comment at first as 'the flower is a blur'   -   I missed the 'but'               Thanks for your words of appreciation

DeeryDeerth In reply to cricketumpire [2016-08-22 20:21:15 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome! And I haven't really seen them grow in the wild as we know it either... I've spotted them in rural gardens and fields, more like.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

cricketumpire In reply to DeeryDeerth [2016-08-23 08:32:20 +0000 UTC]

Obviously the name must come from their original preference for the disturbed soil of cultivated cornfields. It was a surprise to see them in that situation rather than a flower garden as you are suggesting. It was amazing just how many were scattered across those fields I saw.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DeeryDeerth In reply to cricketumpire [2016-08-23 11:52:34 +0000 UTC]

That is very interesting... but "cornflower" is how the English call it. Because corn doesn't grow really well in Estonia's climate, we see them growing on rye fields, instead. In Estonian, the cornflower is called "rukkilill", which translates to "rye flower".

cricketumpire In reply to DeeryDeerth [2016-08-23 21:25:33 +0000 UTC]

It is interesting that the name changes like that but obvious when you point out the origin of the names more clearly

Thanks for correcting my lack of understanding of your culture Linda
