I thought I might help out on the critique part, I know it very difficult to get the correct focus, if possible turn on a brighter light allowing the camera to focus and turning off the light before the shutterbox goes off. Also you find in a lot of the more spot light portraits that the lighting or the pose will cause the subject to appear well less attached, in this picture you might try next time you might try to have your shoulder father down or more of an downward angle to follow more of the natural flow of the body.
