Description We don't celebrate Halloween here in Australia, I tried it for a couple of years when I was about 9, but a good majority of people just didn't understand why we had turned up on their door steps demanding candy! We did get some poor sod who just didn't understand the concept at all and gave us $10 to go and buy our own candy

I love the picture, it manages to capture the unorganized randomness of halloween. My freinds neighbors used to live in Austrailia and they were a bit confused about the halloween thing too. They also were amazed by the squirell population and went photo-happy....

Actually, I'm pretty sure I've encountered a few houses in the past, that are too lazy (or against candy?) and so they will just give out cash too!! hahah not $10 though maybe a couple quarters or some nickels, hahah

I like the astronaut fellow who's trying to eat the candy

we don't celibrate halloween true, but some of those (such as myself) who are wiccan (or simmilar) celebrate "Hallow's Eve", which happens on the same day <urges fury>(THANK YOU VERY MUCH RC's). Obviously there are still reglious debates over which came first, but they are almost simmilar and the catholic holiday version differs per country, where the pagan versions are less and less celebratory and more and more a simpe acknowledgement of something to be aware of.

cronobreaker In reply to TigaV [2005-09-08 05:21:42 +0000 UTC]

Haha! Urges of Fury! What type of stuff do you do to celebrate?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TigaV In reply to cronobreaker [2005-09-08 11:15:22 +0000 UTC]

well you know all the standard christian holidays? Most of them are just ripoffs of ours. (I gotta get used talking to others about my own religion). Except the funny thing is they took all the minor holidays that were an excuse to dress up or dance around. The Equinox's and Solcti are the major ones, oh I guess and hallow's eve for those on "darker" practices. You know spring cleaning? That was the Spring Equinox, where you'd sweep your house (from east to west) and clean everything, and put salt on your window sills and doorways.

while the equinox and solctices can be explained mathmatically: [link]
(I just googled that btw, not my work)

hallow's eve is supposed to be the time off thinnest points between this plane and the plane of the dead, so ghosts would appear easier to see for those with that kind of ability, among other things.

people such as myself don't really celebrate them ever since witchcraft became labeled by RC's as "devil worship" - which on of the pope's appologized for, but in some states of Aust it's still illegal...And some people still give any male wiccans a funny look and say "a MALE witch?".

Some people get into groups to celebrate, but they are heavy on staying in that group, and I figure it's not worth it joining a community like that.

I know what you mean, us Kiwis don't really get into it. Occasionally there are a few trick and treaters but they stopped coming past our place since we started the whole 'Water Bomb and Other Pranks' thing a few years back. The Warehouse and Kmart still pump it like theres no tomorrow though

Great job on the pic

We don't celebrate Halloween, we have TWO kids-beg-for-candy holidays. 8) These are very old traditions and most of the people always give something to the kids.!.!!! (They don't just BEG, they have to sing/read poems and bless the family.)

Hobbit1978 [2005-09-06 12:27:56 +0000 UTC]

In sort of a weird little side story I heard recently in a marketing magazine that Halloween is becoming a bigger holiday than any of the other ones. From what this article said, Halloween is now the second biggest holiday behind Christmas here in the states and now people are doing more than a one night candy-fest with parties ranging through the entire month of October and beyond. They said that there is now more merchandise and sales of Halloween related items than any other. Weird!

That's very weird! But it makes me feel even worse that I'm missing out on such massive festivities, I think I may just have to organise my own little halloween party here just to feel better

haha. zombies dont eat candy. they eat brains. he should have a brain in his loolie bag thing.

hehe. yeh i remember i tried trick or treating when i was about 12. more than half the people dont even know its halloween. we got hardly anything. some old women gave us like 50 cents between 5 of us. and another ladie gave us a weet bix each. and we also got cookies with chillie in em. so now we just get a couple dozen eggs and drive around in cars getting people we dont like.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

cronobreaker In reply to darkeva [2005-09-07 02:46:02 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I was thinking of putting some brains in his bag but his bag wasn't big enough to really show it, plus it'd probably just look like the candy
hahaha! Eggs, Classy!
