Description "Smiles and laughter, shining eyes were how I thought of you,
A happy, tender, loving person seemed to ring too true.
I never once humored a thought that maybe you had lied,
I never once had understood until the day you died.
Those shining eyes looked up at me, and now I finally know,
What I thought was a happy glimmer was a painful glow.
Those smiles, though wide, were little more than masks to hide a frown,
Your laughter, loud and warm to me, kept you from breaking down.
A quiet, lying happiness was all that I could see,
And though it hurt you, caused you pain, you did it all for me.
I have no true regrets, my friend, except a saddened one.
The only time I cried for you was when you'd finally gone."

-Ghia Mercado

Her head is bowed against the light. She wants to be alone to think, to contemplate, to mourn. He'd gone away so quickly; never once had she thought that it was possible that he could die. Her fingers stray against the cloth of a life-weathered cloak, dark and lifeless without its master. She clings to it in silence. It was all she had left. All she had left to remember him by, but for the burden of memories the both of them had once shared.

Her mind wanders to times when she could've told him at least once how dear he was, but stubborn pride had always gotten in the way. Now, there was no way he could know, no way for his ears to hear the words that she now could only whisper to his shed clothes, mingling with countless her apologies. Perhaps there will be a day, someday, when she would see him again, again in a different place, a different time, a different life. Perhaps then she can apologize. But for now, she can only remain, clinging to his what's left and mourning, all alone.

Wow! Your shading really demonstrates the sadness of the picture.

That kind of loss can be one of the hardest to endure. The thought of never seeing them again, never being able to tell how you really feel is absolutly heartwrenching.

Thanks. It's nice to know that someone understands the picture. This one really made me sad when drawing it and writing the poem. I don't know why.

I know how you feel. Sometimes, when I'm drawing a facial expression, such as a smile or frown, I find myself unconsciously imitating the pose. Or my mood will begin to match that of the picture. It's really weird.
