Description This is a little creature I created that's based on a jerboa, a little desert rodent. He was an experimentation of trying to sculpt fur and make working thin legs, without it falling apart on me. He's made from super sculpy.

This is a great model. The tips from the feedback also help out a lot!
I used to use epoxi (mix a & b together type stuff) but it was very messy. I just started using super sculpey and I think it is awsome. Just doesnt harden the way epoxi did though. Wish I could get that density with sculpey...
See ya,
Ron

Looks great! Great pose! What did you do to keep the thin legs from breaking while it baked? I would love to see some other angles.

Thanks!

There's twisted armature wire in there.. and propoxy all the way up from the base to mid thigh. That is some excellent stuff.

First i've heard of Propoxy. What is it, and where can i get some? Is it like Magicsculp?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

crymsonwolfe In reply to SEAcreative [2005-03-04 17:36:37 +0000 UTC]

Hrm. I'v never heard of Magicsculp but I doubt that propoxy is anything like it. It's actually used by plumbers and usually you can only find it at plumber's supply stores. It's a black and white compound that you mix together manually.. in 20 mins it's rock hard. You can sand it afterwards, if need be. It's a must have if you're going to make armatures.

Amazing work here! Love the character design and the pose rocks!! How big is this guy and how long did it take? How did you make the color blue? Did you paint it? hehe, Just curious. Great work, and would love to see more!!

Thank you!! He's about 6 inches tall, including the ears.. and I have no idea how long he took because i finished him half way.. and then had to put in aside.. and then finished him months later. He is painted.. I didn't have grey so it's just a mix of black and white acrylic paint. He's much darker than he should be.. also, he should be spray painted matter grey.. that's industry standard.

I love your icon!!!

Well that is very cool!

Do you by chance know anything about how to get a really smooth look to clay...using super sculpey. I was told painting on some turpenoid...but I don't know if you put that on the model, then fire it...if it would burst into flames?!? O_o So I was just curious if you knew anything about it?!?

Great work!

I read here [link] that you can smooth super sculpy by using olive oil and a soft paintbrush.

crymsonwolfe In reply to MumboJumbo [2005-03-03 17:22:58 +0000 UTC]

Thanks again!!

I've been told the same thing about the turpenoid stuff. I tried Bestine (a solvent and paint thinner) on it.. which works great for oil based clays, like Roma or Jolly King.. but I really didn't like what it did to sculpy.. it made it all gooey icky. However, I did use rubbing alcohol once for some small areas and that seemed to work okay. There's actually supposed to be something especially for sculpy that's supposed to smooth it out.. but i've never seen it.. only heard of it.. don't remember name though. As long as you let it dry before baking it.. it shouldn't burst into flames. Hee.

If the piece is solid enough.. wet sanding works great.. but it doesn't work if you have intricate pieces like you do. That's kinda why i've switched over to doing creatures with fur.. takes longer but I like the results better.

Wow, thanks for the info! Much, Much appreciated!!! This helps a lot! I just bought some Turpenoid, so I am going to use it on a small sample to try it out....I never heared of doing rubbing alcohol! Too cool, I must try it!! So helpful! Thankkkkkksssss! hehe. And wet sanding...never heard of that either! If you wet the model does it crack easier? I've never sanded my models before...what grade of sand paper do you use? Thanks for the tips again! You ROCK!!

crymsonwolfe In reply to MumboJumbo [2005-03-03 17:41:30 +0000 UTC]

So very welcome! Hee hee. That's the whole key.. trying it out on a small area. You can always fix it if it doesn't work. Nope, wetting a baked model doesn't harm it a bit. What I've done is dry sand it first, starting at about 50 or so.. move up til you're at about 200 something (don't remember the exact grade). Then switch over the a special kind of wet sanding sand paper. Looking at some right now.. but I don't know what the grade it.. it says 411Q on it though... or maybe it's the NG4? Dunno! Sanding is sculpy is really messy though. Haven't tried starting out with wet sanding yet.. that wouldn't be as messy since it all gets washed away in the sink. Hee. If you give it a try, do a practice run first some blob of baked sculpy.. I think you'll really like the smoothness of the finish when you're done.

Fiver picture, eh? I'll see what I can do. I was actually going to make a sculpture of Watership Down bunnies.. I haven't decided which ones yet and what pose.
