Description As I continue writing Acts of Emotion, I'm also trying to flesh out the crew of the USS Providence for future stories. Captain Slater was a character I introduced properly in chapter 7, and I had a mental image of him once I started writing him. (It just took me a while to draw him because I couldn't get his face right.)
Every starship crew needs a captain, and on the Providence, it's the wide-framed, hyper-affectionate Nathanael Slater ("Nate" to his friends).
As a child, Slater grew up hearing stories of his ancestors, Civil Rights leaders who championed equality for all humans in the mid-20th Century. He often worried that he would never measure up to their achievements, but as he grew up, he realized there was still a lot of hatred in the galaxy. Even the Vulcans, their closest neighbors, felt like distant strangers. Drawing on his background, he decided to join Starfleet and make it his life's mission to advance social harmony. There, he formed a close friendship with a Vulcan named Satak, through whom he would later meet Lieutenant T'Kov and welcome her aboard his ship.
Slater could best be described as a big heart surrounded by a thick wall of muscle. He is a dedicated pacifist whose goal in life is to unite the galaxy through the open arm of friendship. He generally doesn't like to use violence, but he can easily put up a fight when someone takes advantage of his kindness. He's very hands on with his crew, encouraging closeness between them, and acts as something of a mentor to T'Kov specifically. (I can see their relationship being similar to Sisko and Jadzia Dax, as they know each other through a mutual relationship with another person.)
Outside of command, Captain Slater also has a fondness for music, though his musical taste is far different from most Starfleet captains, favoring soul jazz and psychedelic rock. He owns a collection of ancient Earth records, many of them from the 1960s and 70s, and listens to them to unwind after a hard day. He is a talented singer and has likely performed for his crew on more than one occasion.
Part of me also sees him as a possible ancestor of Benjamin Sisko (my favorite Starfleet captain), though I haven't fully set this in stone yet.
