What makes this season a little awkward is that they're suppoosed to like have the mane six show their elements, but so far they've been more like showing some of them not show their elements then show them. And THAT'S just stupid.
But despite Rarity being generous then not generous and back to being generous, this episode gets an A.

Rarity-centric episodes are usually really good I noticed. Why is that?

Hi. Firstly I want to say that I really enjoy reading your reviews (even if I have to download them) and I like the different insights you bring up. I can't wait to see more.
Now, down to business. I have a question that's kind of nagging me, and right now you're the only pony expert I can turn to (if "pony expert" isn't an appropriate title then my apologies). Recently, someone has stated that the only reason people like Coco Pommel is because she is basically a clone of Fluttershy, seeing as how Coco is shy, demure, and rises up to do a good deed. Personally that sounds really dumb and narrow minded to me, but I'm hesitant to reply in case I'm overreacting, or if I've overlooked something. Since you seemed to enjoy Coco's character, I was hoping that maybe you could shed some light on this.
Is Coco a clone of Fluttershy?

Hi Ally, nice to see you, as always.
Thanks for the positive feedback. In answer to your question, I wouldn't personally say that Coco Pommel is a clone of Fluttershy at all. I didn't get that impression from her character. From what I saw of the character, she was working in a competitive environment as an assistant to an audacious loud-mouth of higher professional ranking than her. Therefore, her behaviour wasn't so much 'shy' as it was basically her taking the abuse without kicking up a fuss based on her lack of authority and her need to suck up to the individual presumably employing her.
She wasn't a pushover - she tacitly resisted Suri with her reluctant facial expressions while Suri was showing her true colours and actively opposed her by giving Rarity the winning trophy at the end. If anything, her hesitance to overtly challenge Suri was pragmatic and completely realistic to how someone might act in that situation. If someone is going to accuse every character with timid tendencies (or, indeed, any character who rises up to do a good deed) as being a Fluttershy clone, then the show is already various shades of yellow and pink.

Thank you very much for the answer. My feelings were along the same lines, but you were able to put it into better words.
Also, thank you for adding me to your watch! I can't promise much content, since I haven't posted anything here for quite a while, but it's nice to know that you're keeping an eye out.

If you run into anyone who disagrees with you, don't be afraid to stand up for what you believe in. You had a valid viewpoint - be confident in yourself.
Not a problem on the 'watch' front - I've been meaning to add you for a while.

I give this episode an A as well. As a person who lives in New York, I kind of had a laugh about how Manehatten is all about "Generosity" and such. While you will find that in New York you will also find the opposite... a lot... but it's nice to be hopeful. Nevertheless, it felt like a good cartoon representation of New York. Rarity shines a lot in this episode both in her behavior and in her song, further convincing me she's the best solo singer of the entire group. Out of all the characters, Rarity feels the most developed since the first season and her episodes are very high ranked in my opinion.
The villain, Suri Polomare, is kind of like "Adult Diamond Tiara" in a way, and really worked her way up to top civilian quality in my book mainly do to her being a plagiarist. As a writer, those are the type of people I want to punch even it's not writing they are copycatting. Rarity pushing her friends to help her make a new line was done very well. I felt bad and understanding of both side. For Rarity, she really needs to get this done because this is important to her, but she's going to far and ruining her best friend's time here in Manehatten. I do feel sorry for the girls because they're missing out their own fun, but I have to admire them for sticking to their friend, even if she's acting demanding and guilt tripping them. It worked well for both sides.
When Rarity realizes her mistake, that's when the cheerful song before turns somber, and I actually liked that part more (I'm a sucker for sad stuff). But to her amazement her friends come back to her because even though they were upset, they're not gonna let one bad incident overlook the fact that Rarity, overall, is a good individual and that's an important lesson that reflects relationships we have in real life. No friendship is ever perfect, there are qualities we don't like in various individuals just as others don't like aspects of my own personality. But we still are friends because our good traits outweigh our bad and we know that deep down we are always there for each other.
And it was nice to see Coco get something out of this in end and I expect the fandom to use this character more. Overall, a great episode.

I'd say this episode does deserve an A. My view on this episode did peak my interest as the setting of Manehaten did depict the actual Manhattan thoroughly. Certain locations were an obvious give away, but also the average behavior, such as the cutthroat competitor, the shy apprentice, etc. Some seemed cold and rude at first glance, and others were cheerful. Rarity was almost warped into believing she had to put herself before others, but instead realizes her mistake and decides to reconcile. It interested me how she topped her own fabric design with the hotel decor as her dress designs. All of the new ponies were fascinating as well as appearances by Photo Finish and Sapphire Shores. Overall, this was a great episode. Carrot dogs, lol. Plus, didn't the pony at the broadway show hanging in the air look like Applejack?

I actually thought that Princess Twilight Sparkle was an excellent season opener, and that Bats! was pretty clever in the reworking of the basic story plot of 'oh no, my friend's a vampire.' Granted, Daring Don't wasn't exactly what many people, myself included, were expecting in another story about everyone's favorite Indiana Jones parody, but I still think it was good enough. To be honest though, I haven't really made up my mind over my absolute favorite, and considering that the season is less than halfway finished, thee are probably going to be a lot more episodes to choose from.

Interesting to read the motivations behind you giving an episode an A rating.
I did thoroughly enjoy this episode, and found it to be quite wonderful, however one thing that bugged me to a lesser extent was Twilight's excitement towards the play that Rarity provided to her friends. This because, as an alicorn princess, shouldn't Twilight have a degree of authority that should surpass that of the general population? Surely 1 of 4 rulers of the nation should be able to secure some seats at a play without problems?
This issue was more prominent when it came to her inability to secure a cab from some pedestrians. I usually don't mind most fallacies of the show, but Twilight's continued lack of authority despite her new title and status is starting to bother me somewhat.
Her lack of authority here felt like a contrivance to allow for Rarity to show and receive generosity to help establish the whole "Do good things and good things happen" setting of the city.
It's nothing I would call major though, just something I took note of. I feel that the rest of the episode greatly redeemed this, and therefore agree with the A rating of which you gave it.

I like Flutterbat episode better than the Manehattan episode too, if you compare them back to back.
However, I like the Manehattan better in context of season 4.
It was nice to see a character driven episode again, after all the fanservice episodes.
