I love this art work and all the other ones you did. If you don't mind I was thinking of using this one as inspiration for the creature design that my story's character can turn into. I've been looking for an idea involving a fox hybrid for my story.

Would I be able to use this creature in one of my stories?Β

I know you did this from imaagination, but here in Chile we have a myth of a creature quite similar to that, called a guruvilo (or curuvilo, curufilo, guirivilo... there's tons of ways to write it).

Culpeo-Fox In reply to Friggo-Glicker [2017-07-09 06:04:33 +0000 UTC]

In fact, the Nguruvilu was the exact creature that served the inspiration for this (if you look closely at the classification that i made up there, you can find a direct give-away to that (tribus "gurufilinae").

I notice it after I commented. I have always found it quite interesting that you (been from Germany) are interested in several myths and animals from here (South America). I anyway love your work (I say it here since I never had the oportunity to tell you )

Gracias!

Yes, i've been "linked" to your place as people always (like...always) mistake me from being South-American (Chile, Peru and Bolivia is what i here the most). I'm Thai-German but look neither Thai nor German - apparently, i do look South-American. There have been several occasions, where South-American tourists just started speaking Spanish to me because they thought i was a landsman (which is part of the reason why the Zorro Culpeo became my namesake - a Zorro/False Fox from South-America, it was as perfect as could get). And it took me even longer to realise that you have the Nguruvilu, a mythical creature that combines both my favourite animals, fox and snake. So yeah, i assume there "is" something about me and and your country, apparently.

I would love to visit Chile and/or Peru at some point in my life because of this (and seeing Culpeo Foxes in real life as well, of course). Also, searching for the Nguruvilu in books and stuff like that - just recently, i've been to Paris and actually saw a picture of the Nguruvilu in a book (which was about mythical creatures) and was absurdly happy about it since it is so rare to find anything about it outside its native place of origin!

well, if you come, I could show you around. And that's why I thought the snox was something you came up with, as I have noted you love both foxes and snakes. Although I don't know how much you would find about guruvilu, as is not a really popular or known myth, it is even obscured by the cuchivilu, a somehow related myth (influenced by the spaniards), which is a half hog-half snake. But we do have several interesting myths, several including zorros (although mostly the occupy the same archetype foxes do on Europe and Asia, mischievous tricksters). And if you want t see culpeos it wouldn't be that hard, as they are not uncommon and are not afraid of people

Is the jaw fully attached like a fox's or can it "unhinge" like a snake's? And it the bottom jaw fused?

Yes, the Nguruvilu is the EXACT mythological creature the snox and pythox-designs were based on. (hence their Tribus name being Gurifilinae)

Hmm, interesting statement that the species name changed due to latest research.... species names are given arbitrarily by the first person to discover/write and submit an official species description... the only way a species name ever changes is if they realize someone else actually discovered it first (such as the unfortunate case of the Sugar Maple. Some poor dope accidentally gave the Silver Maple the name "Acer saccharinum", saccharinum being latin for sugar, having mistaken the silver maple for the sugar-producing maple he'd heard about. When the description was made for the *actual* sugar maple, it had to be named "Acer saccharum", which doesn't actually mean anything but is as close to "sugar" as they could fudge it) or if they realize that what they thought were two species were actually one species (such as the Eclectus parrot , of which the males and females were initially thought to be separate species), or one species which they determine to actually be two species (such as the Green Mountain Maidenhair fern , which was determined by a professor of mine to be a separate species from regular maidenhair ferns)

So I'm curious about what happened to make its species name change

Love all your dragons by the way, I wish I could draw that well.

Try getting your inspiration from nature. That means: Whatever form the dragon wings in your mind have, birdlike, or batlike or something completely different - go and study bird wings/bat wings, their anatomy and how these are built.
