I'm not ready to give specific advice but getting into the habit of constructing your sketch with simple 3d shapes like cylinders and cubes and then refining those into body parts at a secondary time should help.
If you just start with lines without any reference points it's going to get messy and all the proportions are going to be off, then new mistakes will derive from the previous mistakes to the point where you can't fix it anymore.
