what i like about this drawing is the fact that, although it's just a study, it shows a man who is not the best looking, but older and not posing in some unnatural or outstanding way. i think that it's a good change from all the well built male figures everyone teaches you how to draw in tutorials and such.

hehe, we here actually just don't have any choice, we have to draw whoever we got to. it's great to have some muscular men to pose, but there aren't really many models. every semester is like a contest which group of students will get good models and which unlucky one will got some old chumps.

that sounds a bit unfair. or maybe i'm getting it wrong aren't you supposed to share the models, not compete for them?
anyway, as strange as that may sound, i think that drawing after old and not so pretty models actually helps, it makes your works more expressive, because everyone can paint beautiful people

no, it's easier to draw and paint not very good looking people. they say, the hardest thing to draw is a perfectly clean, young and beautyful woman's face.

and yes, we actually compete for models. each group get two or three models for the whole semester and there really limited number of people who agree to work for a quite small fee my academy pays. so basically it's the same people over and over again, there are good models amongst them and groups, in fact, compete to get the best ones.

He looks like a Roman scuplture, I can see your technique through the shading (I really must learn that). I don't know what is is about your technique (the harsh shading, which I like), but he comes right off the page.
