PERSONALS
Occupation: Professional pit fighter in training. Originally a lower circuit fighter whose loss record made him a poor headliner, he's now working with Lex Mizrahi to improve his skills and thus his image. So far he's showing a lot of promise. Aside from that, he makes some money on the side as an abstract artist (pseudonym R.E.D.)
Town of Residence: Mahogany Town
Personality:
Elijah is highly temperamental and struggles with finding healthy ways to express his frustration and anger. He is naturally a very passionate person who tries to stifle his emotions, which usually results in disproportionate reactions such as outbursts and physical altercations. He is defensive to a fault and prone to lashing out at people who levy criticisms against him – even if criticism is warranted. He carries grudges easily, believes wholeheartedly in the concept of justified revenge, and does not hesitate to throw a punch when threatened, cornered, or frightened. He can come across as abrasive to those who do not know him well, and his marked distrust of strangers makes him incredibly difficult to approach on friendly terms.
He is, however, deeply loyal to those he cares for or those he believes deserve his protection. While his methods can often be considered questionable, Elijah will do what he considers the "right" thing when presented with moral quandaries – and his idea of what counts as “right” can be a stretch when he’s looking to start a fight.
Anyone who can get close to him will learn that Elijah is truly an idealist at heart and can’t stand to see innocent people suffer due to the actions of others. His propensity towards taking everything personally makes him react towards injustice with unbridled anger, though, and this can make him seem needlessly belligerent.
All in all, Elijah dislikes too much social contact and tends to withdraw from others when he feels overwhelmed. He doesn’t mesh well with outgoing or aggressively social people, as they make him uncomfortable and can grate his nerves. He is especially averse to physical contact - he has a deep-seated dislike of being touched, and will not hesitate to react aggressively towards anyone who lays a finger on him without his prior consent.
The hardest thing for Elijah is finding ways to expend his internalized anger that won’t result in hurting innocent people. As a Gyarados he is already a naturally hostile creature, and it is only made worse by the abuse he’d been subjected to prior to obtaining his dittech. He has a variety of outlets and self-care techniques that have lessened the pressure somewhat, but he’s always looking for new methods of anger management.
After gaining Darkrai's blessing and being forcibly merged with Giratina in Shiloh's dreamscape, Elijah has been thrown into a very turbulent mind state. He is trying to come to terms with his own fears of being a monster and hurting the people he loves, but he is struggling after the things he witnessed and became complicit in. While he still fears his potential, he is making an honest effort to understand his anger and to find peace.
History:
Elijah began his life as an abnormally aggressive wild Magikarp that was a lighter shade of orange than the thousands of other Magikarp in the Slateport harbor. He survived multiple run-ins with fishermen, trainers, bird Pokémon, and other bigger fish looking for a meal through a combination of sheer willpower and dumb luck. He looked a little worse for wear, admittedly, but being a battle-scarred Magikarp was better than being a dead Magikarp. He also really liked using that tenacity to fling himself out of the water and smack trainers in the face if he didn’t like the look of them.
After slapping the wrong trainer, Elijah ended up on the receiving end of a retaliatory ass kicking from a ruthless Bisharp. That was the final straw – he evolved through what felt like sheer rage alone, transforming into a massive red Gyarados and summarily punting both trainer and Pokémon into the next week.
Given the last widespread report of a red Gyarados had come from Mahogany Town during the Team Rocket shenanigans, it spread fairly quickly that another had come to the seas near Slateport. And Elijah hadn’t really done much to hide himself; he was taking on any and all comers, utterly destroying anyone who thought they had the skill to capture him. He was finally big enough to stand up for himself, and – most importantly – he was really, really pissed off.
His freedom didn’t last long, unfortunately, and he was finally taken down and captured a few weeks later by a veteran trainer. He refused to be tamed, and when the trainer couldn’t command obedience out of him through force, he tried to sell him. No one would pay the amount he wanted, though, and he eventually settled on harvesting Red Scales from the captive Gyarados for money.
Confined in a warehouse near the Slateport harbor and separated from the ocean and other living creatures, Elijah might have remained miserable and malnourished in captivity if it hadn’t been for a wandering Pokéhuman. The creature quite literally stumbled across him, falling into his holding tank and very nearly becoming his dinner before they managed to talk the starving Gyarados down. Recognizing him as a victim, they brought him food and helped him regain enough strength to escape. Their plan involved handing him a dittech once he was well enough to move, which would turn him into a pokéhuman as well.
Being turned into a human was unpleasant, to say the least – rapidly changing from a massive sea serpent to a small two-legged creature was disorienting for a multitude of reasons, and Elijah was at least lucky enough that he had an experienced pokéhuman there to lead him to safety while he struggled to make heads or tails of how his legs and other parts worked.
They brought him to their family for some time, where he learned about the dittech, PMA-Co, and pokéhumans. While they tried their best to help him adjust to his new situation, he suffered from rapidly deteriorating emotional stability. Physically, he felt better, but now he was being forced to process what he’d been through and he couldn’t handle it, overcome by internalized anger and violent urges. Fearing he might lash out at some point, he left in the middle of the night and tried not to look back.
After getting into a few altercations while travelling in search of a purpose, Elijah found Apellon Corp and chose to have his dittech hacked to protect himself from tracking by PMA-Co. He found a new outlet for his anger in the fighting pits, and became a volatile and highly unpredictable fighter in the lower circuits. His win-loss record was too variable to make it a proper source of income for him, however, so he eventually signed on with Apellon to fill any outsourced, freelance, or otherwise temporary guard jobs they might have available. Barring that, he makes some side money selling abstract art and scavenging around the coastlines for valuable items.
[REVERIE]
Elijah, like many other Pokéhumans, was plagued by nightmares and hallucinations during the Reverie events. After suffering through repeating nightmares of his inner demon killing him, his pain was alleviated when he discovered a scrap of black cloth within his dreams. Little did he know, that cloth was a piece of Darkrai - a manifestation, at least, scattered in pieces across the dreamworld. This "tribute" is what drew him to the ocean off the shore of Amie Isle with others after the merging of the dreamworld and the real world.
After fighting their way to the top of a skyscraper beneath the waves, Elijah and his companions discovered Darkrai within a gate. It was being poisoned by nightmare creatures, and Elijah helped the others rescue it from its aggressors. In thanks, Darkrai gave Elijah its blessing and departed - or so he thought.
When everyone was split amongst the three planes to fight the manifestations of Giratina, Elijah was pulled into Shiloh Tinamou's plane. He and others fought the Giratina contained there, but all seemed fruitless... until Elijah struck the Giratina and Darkrai's presence forced him to merge with the creature. This experience led to the group gaining the ability to defeat the Giratina, but not without sacrifice; each was forced to answer difficult questions and solve painful scenarios laid before them by what appeared to be Shiloh Tinamou himself. Upon completing each scenario, all were released, and the fight ended with Shiloh's rescue.
Elijah went through a terrifying process of acceptance and recovery following the events, coming to terms with what he became when he fused with Giratina and the anger that he felt during the fusion. He sought help from Shiloh himself, and began working towards accepting that what Darkrai had given him was a blessing and not a curse.
[SEADEEP]
Elijah eventually came to learn that his contact with Darkrai made him what was referred to as "god-touched." He discovered that Darkrai was a presence still residing within him, and that this partnership was not something to be scared of. He tried to learn more about this connection from those who could offer that knowledge, but information was fleeting and confusing. He would continue his search for answers, but new events came to bear - storms began raging across the regions, and he knew he had to act.
Elijah ended up venturing beneath Sootopolis with a fellow dragon named Orpheus, where they defeated a shadow-like monster. Orpheus received a blue orb from the creature after its defeat, but later chose to give the orb to Elijah to protect someone he was caring for. Elijah agreed to take the orb and protect it, whatever it may be.
After deciding to attend a masquerade in Proteus with many others from the community, Elijah ended up joining the battle against Lugia-Yveltal when it attacked. He was heavily injured during the ordeal, however, taking the brunt of an acid attack across his side and becoming absorbed within the creature's wing alongside another Pokéhuman named Henry. He would have been taken to Mirr from there if it hadn't been for Henry - when Kayla attempted to swap places with Henry, Henry chose instead to trade with Elijah, freeing him from his fate. He awoke in Proteus once again, scarred from the ordeal but alive.
After experiencing the strange peace he felt while absorbed within Lugia-Yveltal, Elijah is once again questioning his anger and the pain he's struggled with ever since he was blessed by Darkrai. He continues searching for peace where he can.
[DREAMSCAPE]
In progress!
Relationships:
Sully (Pancham) - Sully is the pokéhuman who rescued Elijah and brought him a dittech. Elijah spent some time with their family about 7 years ago, but his time there was short-lived. After accidentally causing damage to their house and nearly hurting the family with his abilities, Elijah bolted in the middle of the night and ceased contact with Sully entirely. They've only recently become reacquainted and are working to repair their friendship.
Gil (Typhlosion) - Elijah briefly trained under Gil's tutelage along with several other pit fighters, but was kicked from the program when Gil shut it down. He resented him for a little while because of it, but they reestablished contact later and he eventually moved past it. Gil was badly injured during their venture into the merged dreamworld in the ocean near Amie Isle, and Elijah harbors a lot of guilt for what happened to him. All things considered, he admires Gil despite his less than stellar reputation.
Lex (Incineroar*) - Elijah's current training and talent coach. After Elijah discovered his ability to cast Dark Void in the middle of an open pit match, Lex approached him and offered to help him build his skills in hopes of becoming a headliner. The training is going well so far, but Elijah has some (unvoiced) concerns about Lex's business practices.
Shiloh (Munna) - Elijah's still not sure how he feels about Shiloh, but the two have a shared experience that makes them uniquely attuned to one another's respective traumas. They've spoken about the events that occurred when Micare released Giratina and Elijah helped several others to rescue Shiloh from its influence, and despite their lack of commonalities otherwise, Elijah has extended an offer to be Shiloh's friend should he want the support.
Orpheus (Dragonite) - A spontaneous partnership during their adventure beneath Sootopolis has formed an interesting acquaintanceship between the two dragons. Elijah trusts Orpheus, and he seems to trust him in return; after fearing what the blue orb they discovered might be capable of, Orpheus asked Elijah to take it off of his hands. Elijah agreed, earning a favor from Orpheus in the process.
Khel (Dragonair) - A new friend of Elijah's, and one he's grown very close to thanks to the events they've weathered together. They met when Khel decided to feed the Magikarp at the pier near Elijah's home, and formed a friendship after Elijah invited him home to escape the rain. The two later ended up bonding over their shared acquaintanceship with another Pokéhuman named Circe. After dancing together at the masquerade ball and spending some time at the New Light festival, both are slowly coming to a mutual understanding of each other's feelings and fears.
Circe (Starmie) - Elijah's friendship with Circe was pure chance. They met while Elijah was swimming not far from Sootopolis City; Circe had ventured out to investigate some abnormal activity further out, and the two ended up conversing when they realized they were both Pokéhumans. They don't see each other much because of their respective career choices, but sometimes they meet up to go swimming in the oceans around Hoenn.
Morgan (Glaceon) - A surprise friendship formed between these two thanks to their mutual god-touched status. While they disagree about some things, Elijah greatly respects Morgan and has faith in his ability to accept Suicune's presence. He understands what it's like to struggle with that sort of influence, and he's offered Morgan his support as he comes to terms with what he is.
Brian (Lycanroc*) - While they haven't had much of a chance to get to know each other in depth, the two have already formed an interesting friendship via shared experience. While things began fairly poorly (Brian stole Elijah's sandwich and Elijah tried to Hyper Beam him, before they ended up in a jail cell courtesy of Marco) they've taken some time to talk and work things out. Elijah thinks Brian's a little eccentric, but he's surprisingly easy to relate to.
Jax (Kangaskhan) - They're at least passingly familiar, but not incredibly close. Jax's work with Apellon pit fighters means Elijah has gone to him for treatment a few times, and they've held amicable conversations.
Extras:
- Voice reference is Sam Clark. Link: Here
- Fights like a glass cannon berserker. He tries to take down his opponents via sheer overwhelming force right out of the gate; if this doesn’t work, he’s completely vulnerable to retaliation. Betting on him to win a match is always a toss-up.
- He has issues with maintaining a healthy sleep cycle and eating habits. He’s prone to going without sleep or food for longer than he should, and this lack of self-care can affect his performance in detrimental ways.
- Elijah’s hard pressed to keep it a secret, but he’s tried to find new ways to expend his anger and has taken up painting. His “art” is generally an abstract mess of thrown paint cans and ripped canvases, but it sells surprisingly well… under a pseudonym, of course.
- Most consider Mahogany Town an uneasy sort of place to be, but Elijah actually finds it quite soothing there. Something about living near the Lake of Rage brings him some calm. It’s quieter than living in one of the larger cities.
- The white streak in Elijah's hair came from Darkrai after his dreamscape adventure concluded.
