Description On 6th July 1944, Operation Neptune also known as D-Day was under way. At 00:16hrs Gliders of the 6th Airbourne Division began an assault on Pegasus Bridge, Caen, in Operation Tonga. Thus the Allied action commenced. At 07:25 hrs British and Commonwealth landings began on Gold Beach, then at 07:30hrs Sword Beach but due to delays caused by the weather, Juno beach landings commenced at 07:35hrs. At the end of the day 83,115 men took part in the action, 61,715 of those were British. 350 men were lost on Gold Beach, 683 lost at Sword Beach and 340 lost on Juno Beach, a total of 1373 men collectively lost by days end with 2357 wounded and at least 47 men captured by Axis forces.
