Description Created for the "Old Chest" contest at

ETA 12/12: Thank you so much to everyone who voted for "Forgotten Stories" - she won first place in Advanced!

The challenge was to create an interpretation of ~singod 's short story, "Old Chest". [link]

"The light bounces off an old chest in the corner,
A thick film of dust adorns it, sparkling in the sun,
Outlines of the once beautiful craving dot the top,
And all but one of the handles remains on the side.
Years of neglect has turned this treasure trove so,
But today this would reveal its contents,
As this hand shall dust off the years from this chest.
The cloth quickly turns brown from white,
Nothing that a flick of the hand can't cure,
Slowly but steadily the grime dirt starts to come off,
Thus showing the intricate cuts beneath.
Inside it are the remains of the world that was.
Little pieces of history that have a story to tell.
The smell of once crisp pages overpowers me,
Rendering me oblivious to the world that surrounds this body.
I can sense the hands that once flowed over these pages,
Firm yet gentle, determined yet unsure,
The ink has faded but still the story lingers,
Of lost dreams, and the unknown future,
Of deep thoughts, and deeper feelings.
As I read them, I get to know why they were hidden away,
Locked away from the world in the corner,
The truth is not for me to uncover,
Digging up old skeletons would lead only to more pain,
So, I put them back, for someone else to make the decision."

This lovely story caught my attention because I have an antique carved chest I inherited from my great-uncle that I felt would be perfect for this piece, as well as a stack of letters my grandfather wrote to his mother in the '20s and '30s. I was delighted to be able to use both in "Forgotten Stories".

OMGosh Deb. this is sooooo wonderful. if there were a word that is better than perfection this is it. you blow me away. the lighting and shadows are flawless. i love the writing on the wall effect but if you bent it a little to match the wooden beams it might give it a more dimensional look and not so flat. absolutely the most beautiful chest i have ever seen. and you said that the stack of letters are from your grandfather wow. i would just love to read those. you know this would be such a wonder gift to give your mother and father for christmas because you used those wonderful letters. well anyway i'm going off the subject. simply wonderful dear.

Thank you so much, sweetie! You know, that's a great idea about a gift for my parents...I think it'd really make my dad happy to see his uncle's chest and his dad's letters in a piece like this. Muchas gracias for the suggestion!

The warm colors are, in my opinion, a stark contrast to the content of the story. But I love this effect. It gives the picture a kind of mysticel aura (=
Also, I can't find any transitions.

I like this
The story behind this opens up your imagination.
For some reason adding the text and the border rubs a bit of the realistic-ness away from it.
The cutting out is a bit rough but other than that it looks very nice indeed.
Good luck !

Amazing!
I’m not used to critiquing, but here is my best try:
Everything is simply brilliant! Light of the candle, letters in the air! Beautiful! It’s so hard to find anything to critique… hmm…maybe position of her legs, it looks a little bit off… uncomfortable...
What I absolutely adore are those books and letters! They just look wonderful! And that chest is so beautiful! I want one just like that!

Thank you so much! I totally agree about the position of her legs...I did try and move them a little bit but it didn't work out too well. lol I'm so glad you like the chest, though - I'm so pleased I got a chance to use it in an art piece!
