Description One of the most interesting birds of tropical america, the Sunbittern flashes eye patterns on it's wings at would-be attackers like hawks or falcons. It feeds on small mollusks and fish at the waterside.

Bizarrely, as well as its New Caledonian relative, it is also a close cousin of the tropicbirds.

Yeah, two close branches ofΒ Metaves. Fairly interesting, really- definitely two very prominent 'standouts' that don't seem to belong anywhere else. Odd that they're grouping the Pigeons as close cousins of the Grebes and Flamingoes though. I'll have to look into this more sometime- quite interesting Β

Owl-nightjar-swift-hummingbird group (which I suspected) and falcon-phorusracid-seriema-parrot-passerine group (just how many record does this group break?)

Owl-nightjar-etc. makes sense in some aspects, I suppose- more sense than the older records in which owls were grouped with vultures or falcons. Not too sure about that latter one though Parrot and falcon is pushing it a bit, but grouping them all with the passerines..?Β

The owl-nightjar-swift-hummingbird connection isn't surprising, and I think placing falcons with passerines can work-insectivores are predators.

Honestly the designs of the bird draw the eye completely away from the feet and branch, don't worry about it! It's perfect!
