Not to get nerdy or try and take away from the comic, it is funny as hell, but I think he tore his shirt all the time for the most part of season one is mainly because of the Superman symbol on it, which is all he knows and stuff but when he gets angry he blames Supes for not accepting him and helping him and wants nothing to do with the symbol, so he tears his shirt.
