Such an amazing piece. Please help me understand if you would be so inclined. 1) You used a pencil to make the cloudy sky then used a kneaded eraser to create the light spaces in the cloud. Is that the general idea? 2) Did you used 2 types of marker one for the caste shadow of the cacti and the pencil to make the form shadow? 3) How did you make the transition so seamless. I've tried this with ink and graphite and never got mine to look so good.

1) Correct. I always use that technique, but I combine it with smudging.
2) No. Marker was only used for yellow colour. I just 3) smudge. I use a a very smooth but thick (28o gsm) kind of paper. I smudge with eyeglass cleaning tissue so it doesn't leave texture.
I keep the dirty/soaked-in-graphite places of the tissue for darker parts of the drawing and cleaner for the lighter parts. so the dirty parts actually give me gradient when smudging (the graphite starts acting like charcoal). I placed the shadows first then shaped them with kneaded eraser and ruler, then i drew the landscape around them.
The paper is responsible for me being able to pull out such black shades and gradients. All other papers either don't give me such deep blacks or give me texture when smudging.
Also I suggest using mech pencils. The normal graphite has a lot of reflection...mech pencil leads somehow have much, much less reflection.

So do you work the papper with a harder lead to get the hb more into the tooth?

2B leads. HB leads are terrible..
And I work only with Staedtler leads. They produce the darkest pigment/tones.
