Description This was the first real field test of my new diffuser design, and I'm really happy with the way it turned out. These Scarlet Lilly Beetles practically have a clear coat on that shell -extremely reflective.

Tech Specs: Canon 70D (F16, 1/250, ISO 100) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (2x) + a diffused MT-24EX (flash head "A" set as the key and "B" as the fill). This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held.

Technique: I found this critter late in the day and it was pretty lethargic. I held the grass stem that it was on in front of an artificial flower and rested the lens on that same had to keep the scene steady.

I am confused at how you are getting such great DOF with only one shot.  Can you tell me about how far the subject was from the front of the lens?  As a Nikon user with the 105mm f/2.8 VR, I wonder how many mm's worth of tubes I would have to use to give me that kind of DOF?  BTW, love the photo and the subject!

Derek,
The depth is simply a function of the Fstop and the magnification -all macro lenses, at the same Fstop and magnification, will give you the same depth of field. That being said I look for angles that make the most out of what little depth there is in a scene (often referred to in macro circles as "magic angles"). I've been shooting macro for almost 10 years and I still think that focus stacking isn't necessary for most macro scenes.

All macro lenses that have internal focusing (no change in length when you turn the focus ring) lose some magnification at life size. Not sure what focal length your 105mm is at 1x, but I'd guess you could get to 2x (the magnification that I used) with a full set of Kenko extension tubes (68mm). Might be easier, and less cumbersome, to use a 1.4x teleconverter and extension tubes. If you do then add the TC to your camera first, then the tubes, then the lens. You'll get better image quality that way.
