Description I started working on a new series of illustrations for new pulp publisher Airship 27 - in this case, a western entitled Comanche Blood, by R. A. Jones - the continuing story of bounty hunter Jason Mankiller.

In this fifth illustration: Jason wipes blood from his mouth with the back of his left hand as he holds his pistol on the big Copperhead…who now has raised his hands in the air to show he doesn’t have a gun. Jason looks furious…

That jacket in the foreground is great.

Thanks!  I modeled it after the furry vest the Monster wore in Son of Frankenstein.

Love the contrast between black and white here.

Thanks, Zoe!  I was borrowing a bit from the cover of Two-Fisted Tales #1 for inspiration.

Excellent Work! Glad you gave us the description for the panel too, cause I thought Jason was getting attacked by a zombie or something.

Thanks!  Yeah, it came out a little bit that way, especially considering some of my past work.

You are welcome, and it really looks like you are.

Hey, I was wondering. Would you say that Bob Layton is a big influence on your art?

Huh, I'd never much thought of him as an influence on my work per se, but I certainly enjoy his work, especially shiny stuff like Iron Man.

I'm sure he's influenced me subconsciously via how clean his inking is... I do admire that quite a bit.

Well that's good to know, the reason I ask is because doing that Demon in the Bottle inspired cover I was aping Layton and in the inking stage recognized something similar to your art style.

That's an interesting observation!  Now that I think about it, other than the crosshatching elements of my inking, I do instinctively try to follow a clean line like he does.

Well you do have your own style, I just saw something that had to have a influence on you. Which is cool.
