I think Penny Arcade is fine as a "talking heads" piece - it has a lot more of a graphic design influence than your work and is suitably commercial. I like to keep in mind that it has a different goal than work like yours.
From what I've seen of yours, you like working within frames of continuity, story arcs, the like. Penny Arcade, however, can be picked up and read from any point, as it usually depends on day-to-day gags. Neither is a negative approach to the medium, just different ways to reach very different goals.

Really good, I saw it in your journal and was like "K3WL!!!ONEONE" I love the mid-jump snapshop-like scene, and the zombies look really funny. Regarding your impressions on talking heads, I agree with you, but consider it a minro problem for those comics since the objetive is to make you laugh, (Of course, whne you encounter things like C& H or Zits, you jump in an aura of joy, but I assume that's not the norm) but you should take cae when talking about PA, as their fanboys are pretty hotblooded and would register in DA only to bash the opposition. (I enjoy the comic, and read it from time to time, but like to think I have some brain) To tell the truth, this image could be Faith Erin aganist the PA Zombies

wow, really love the color on this! it looks all glowy XD when I saw the title, I instantly thought of the book I Am Legend and it's about this guy who's the only person on earth who hasn't turned into a vampire and all his neighbors who're vampires are always outside his house screaming at him.
"Come out Neville!" XD
Nice work ^^ I can't wait to see the comic!

Very cool! Zombies are the best. Do you read the comic 'Remains'? If memory serves me correctly, you don't much like American comics, but it's Steve Niles fdalkjdf!!!

PA must've changed alot since I last read it, which has been a while. Far as I saw, it relied heavily on photocopyism, so you'd have three panels with waist-up drawings, only the mouths and arms changing. That said, it's what it is: a gag comic, and I've only seen a few (Calvin and Hobbes, Zits and Sherman's Lagoon) that actually strive to go beyond talking heads. Oh, and Non Sequiter, but that seems more a political cartoon.
Anyway, whichever. I don't read PA anymore, so I guess I shouldn't judge it ... currently. In the past, it's been 99% talking heads.

solios In reply to damnskippy [2004-08-14 21:47:16 +0000 UTC]
In the early days, there was quite a bit of that, but things have changed over time. More of a waist-up now, and a good amount of couch shots.
Calvin and Hobbes was more of an exercise in sequential art than a "comic strip" per se. As good as it was, C&H got into a "seasonal loop"- the same thing that's eaten Sluggy Freelance alive. Each year had the babysitter bit, the bully but, the christmas bit, the spaceman spiff bit. They were all different, but the pattern was still there and in my opinion, Waterson realized this, which may have contributed to why he ended the strip when he did.
Bloom County, if memory serves, rarely delved into the talking heads.
Political cartoons, at least in US newspapers, are typically one-panel affairs and as such rarely suffer the Talking Head syndrome- you know as well as I that if you have, say, eight hours to do three panels or one panel, the one-panel page is going to be much slicker.
Regardless, there's a lot that can be done with Talking Heads.... but I really don't see any of the newspaper strips actually doing anything with the style- that is, using it for emotion and facial detail.

A lot of waist up shots? Um, that is talking heads. Talking heads is when the art is always kept on the horizontal plane, with the characters, usually from the waist or chest up, being the only focus of the panel. And it stays that way 99% of the time.
But that's just the kind of comic PA is. I mean, I don't particularly care, because it is a gag comic, not a graphic novel and the art suits it, but I really don't find myself being inspired by the artist's artistic prowess.

Heh. I'll grant that PA fits "talking heads" as you've defined it. The visual style suits the writing nicely, and ultimately, like most comics, you're either into that sort of thing or you're not. The one tactical upside to this style of production is that it's a known target, meaning it's much easier to hit regular updates (page a day, three days a week, etc.). The more interesting stuff (comic-shop formatted webcomics, as opposed to newspaper-formatted strips) always takes more time to produce.

Too cool. I really like the saturated colors. Is this the cover or just a poster? It looks more like a poster with the tagline at the top.

Oh, Zombies! SUBURBAN Zombies!! wicked
And I totaly laugh my a$$ off when I read the header at the top of it.
I also hear what your saying about the talking heads in comics. I still like Penny Arcade because of the wit and the occational Cardboard Tube Samurai pages. But there's Megatokyo and Errant story that still try for artistic road, so the idea of art in comics isn't dead yet. And we all appreciate what you did when you brought us D101, *thanks*!
