"Esmeralda walked the streets of Paris with a cold numbness she seldom displayed. She wanted her friends to see her for the strong, courageous woman they knew she was; the young gypsy could not bear to be among the merrymaking of Clopin's marriage to Belle when all manner of happiness had been drained from her seemingly unbreakable spirit.
Not caring whether the soldiers caught her, Esmeralda wandered towards Notre Dame, her prison and sanctuary. She would rather be standing above the festivities, at the top of the world, than hindering the jovial mood in the Court with her sorrow.
Admittedly, she was overjoyed that her adoptive brother had lived to be married to a beauty like his new wife, therefore she had made all the effort she could to help them with the wedding in any way she could. Still, nothing could console her when it came to realizing that she had forever lost her sun god, her Phoebus, the man who saw her for the woman she was, not as some heathen demon in need of destroying nor as an angelic, spotless vision of sanctity.
The man she loved was dead. Now, she hoped with all her might that there truly was a heaven that awaited her... "
