Description I Remember Scotty
Photograph, Rolleiflex 2.8f, 2.25X2.25 square

A friend of mine on deviantART recently lost his sister to diabetes. It got me to thinking about my brother Scott. He died right about this time of year in 2000 at the age of 39 due to complications from diabetes.

I shot this photograph of Scott in the spring of 1973 when he was thirteen years old. It was for our Mom on Mother’s Day of that year. I was a budding wedding photographer back then, and used an old wedding photographer’s trick to get this image.

I had Scott hold my strobe as he stood sideways by a wall. He held the strobe so it would flash on the wall, and thus overexpose the wall surrounding him while leaving him underexposed at the same time. I then re-set the shutter without advancing the film, then shot a close up of his hands and keyboard as he played his piano. His hands and keyboard only show up where the film was underexposed. This double exposure is the result.

The advancements made in recent years with digital photography are outstanding, and what people can do today with Photoshop is just flat out amazing. But that does not mean one could not be creative with film! And i enjoyed doing a little of that...and thought i might share it with you.

Never did go anywhere as a wedding photographer, and ended up selling the camera to pay the rent. Mom passed in 2001, and i inherited the photograph of Scott.

This is amazing. Technology certainly makes things easier! Film rocks though- much more skill and effort (and the dark room is fun too!) Thanks for sharing this.

Its nice to see traditional techniques back at work. The problem with technology is that it is overused a lot. I also like your story, since I too am diabetic, so is my family. Its heart-warming and heart-wrenching to hear others' stories.
