Niiiiice!

How's the Kuretake compare to the Pentel Pocket Brush?

DanielGovar In reply to RichardPace [2014-04-08 20:45:59 +0000 UTC]

Thanks Richard! My favorites as far as the brush tips are concerned and in order:

Kuretake No 40 - sable hair tip - they synthetic Kuretake make are good but the Sable hair tip is as good as the best natural brush I've used. My one crit with Kuretake is their ink sucks - it's not even waterproof. You have to buy the Carbon ink refills separately.

Copic Multiliner brush tip - this used to be my go-to and still is from time to time, but my watercolor paper destroys these tips fairly quickly, so I must replace them quite often.

Pentel Pocket Brush - Close to the Kuretake in feel, but closer to the Kuretake synthetic tip which doesn't have the same "play" after a few uses. Initially it's awesome, but that flexible line weight doesn't last.

Despite having a massive collection of Copics, I don't think I ever tried their Multiliner brush. . .Β

I've added the Kuretake to my jetpens cart -- do I need to get the adapter for the platinum cartridges?

Love tool talk!

The Copics multiline brush has an awesome flow, and despite a custom felt-based tip - it feels very fluid and nice on bristol. On Arches, though, it gets horribly chewed up. No - the Platinum adapter is essentially useless unless you use a very particular ink, and it requires a lot of cleaning. The Carbon cartridges are cheap and far easier to deal with. They last quite a while as well.Β

Indeed! I am actually making a big post for my blog on ink, another on pens and brush-tips, and another on papers. Speaking of which - what lines paper do you use for comic work?

I have a deep stock of plate-finish Strathmore in 300 and 500 -- there was a sale and I got carried away. Β That said, modern Strathmore Bristol is a joke compared to what it was in the 90s and the 80s. Β I don't pencil on the board because of the quality drop as it can't handle the wear -- I print the rough pencils onto that board then finish the drawing in ink.

I found a stash of Marvel, DC, and Image paper from the early and mid 90s a few months back and it's outstanding to work on, but it's a limited supply, so leaving it for covers and the like.

I used Fabriano hot press watercolour paper for a number of ink drawings last year and was very impressed. Β Once I'm through my Strathmore stock, I'll be switching over to hot press WC paper. Β The sizing and overall quality is higher than what passes for Bristol these days. Β Seeing you're using Arches, I gather you've experienced something similar.

I am starting to use Strathmore - old stock that my supplier still has (most likely late 90s), and liking it but I am kind of fanatical for the Arches tablets. I think it's the amount of cotton they use and their sealed pages are extremely helpful in con environments.

Fabriano I buy large sheets of from time to time - on both that and the Arches I go for hot press. It really does help for line work and the textures you can get from washes on those papers are so much more elegant than what Bristol offers.Β

I placed an order for EON's ruled paper - as there are a few folks I follow who have been talking it up lately, just to give it a whirl. I've had to go with Canson for some of the stuff I'm doing for Grimm which has been OK, but nothing to write home about. Too much water and it becomes a real mess and tough to scan in properly.

I used to do all my acrylic work on hot press Arches pads. Β Loved the surface and worked from acrylic washes to opaque.

Talked to the EON guy (forgot his name), but couldn't work out reasonable shipping to Canada, so that's a some time in the future experiment.
